Porch for a house with odd roof?

We'd like to add a porch to our house but it has a somewhat unusual roof that stretches down to the ground floor (I believe it's called gambrel or Dutch roof), so I'm not sure what would look good, without being at odds with the roof. I've been looking for inspiration along the street and there's only one house with a porch (attaching its pic from Google streetview). Do you think that design looks ok? Am I overthinking the whole roof issue?

I think it looks a bit odd because it doesn't follow the existing line of the tiles.

But then I'm struggling to think what would work. How much space do you need?

NoIdeasForWittyNickname · 21/03/2021 16:39

@bookgirl1982 not that much, just somewhere to take off muddy boots, shake off wet umbrellas, etc.

Rather than putting a porch with a gable style roof, could you build it in the same style as the existing roof, almost like a mini version of the house?

If you can get an enclosed porch with a lockable door, I would. It's so handy for muddy boots etc and for getting deliveries when out.

Hmm, I think you're onto something here, @Hallyup5. I've been looking at that neighbours' porch and just couldn't put my finger on what was putting me off. @bookgirl1982 correctly said it's the mismatch of the roof lines. I guess if the shape of the existing roof is repeated in miniature it'll look more harmonious. Perhaps need a chat with an architect Hmm Tbh the whole porch idea is DH's. I think it might be too much hassle for not much gain, but he's quite determined, so I have to intervene at least to make sure we don't end up with an eyesore Grin

It looks like there is already a small amount of shelter as the main roof overhangs the door by at least a foot or two. So you don’t need something large.

I think I’d go for something flat and leaded like this:
www.lbsbmonline.co.uk/wincanton-flat-lead-effect-roof-grp-door-canopy?gclid=Cj0KCQjw3duCBhCAARIsAJeFyPWhnpqWINOb43x5G65ojO_HYrCAY4sEw6SlAXg_S5PPYXk3x_Pxh5AaAh-PEALw_wcB

This at least matches the roof line of the dormer windows so it ties in with that aspect of the house. It’s also quite subtle. Might not be enclosed enough for your DH though?

I don’t think that will keep much dry in wet windy weather..

I think an enclosed version of something similar would work better. Could you afford glass!

NoIdeasForWittyNickname · 21/03/2021 22:17

@minipie yes, there is a foot-deep overhang! But it's not deep enough. I think @PresentingPercy is right, extending it just a little bit will still leave it exposed. But there are good canopies on that site, some may be useful for our back door off the kitchen Hmm Thank you for the link.

op I did a bing image search for gambrel roof with porch
There are obviously different versions (mostly USA!) but there are one or two that might work
