Hi everyone,

Currently planning to paint our whole house, from walls to ceilings to skirting boards.

We've replastered and skimmed the walls. Most likely will have lining paper to paint over, not sure yet (open to recs).

What paint do you all recommend?

I've seen Dulux, Leyland's, Farrow & Ball... list never ends.

Thank you :)

Going against the grain, I’ve found Wilkos paint very good, especially their Matt. Crown period range of paint goes on like a dream. In my bathroom I used Easycare Tough Matt, it also went on well and has a lovely finish.

@Snowstorming

I’m keen on a polished pebble grey shade in Dulux but the price is a little offputting. Is there really nothing cheaper?
I actually managed to find a 7.5L of Polished Pebble this weekend for £26, the same price I paid for a 5L tub last week! In B&Q.

I wasn't going to pay the extra price for Dulux but then I started to read reviews online for other paints and so many said they had a blue or lilac tinge to them so I'm glad I stuck to this. It's come up so lovely.

Saying that, actually, lots did say polished pebble has a blue tinge but it definitely doesn't on our walls. I think the undercoat/whatever colour you're painting over is key. Because we did a mist coat in white, it had a neutral base.

Apparently Johnstone's frosted silver is very similar to polished pebble.

@TokenGinger thank you so much!! That’s incredibly helpful. We were thinking of a Leylands white mist coat and then Polished Pebble on top. Ah, wish I could see how yours has turned out! I’m super nervous.

Also where did you find the 7.5L tub of Dulux? That price is very good!

@Snowstorming Once the joiner is out of the living room today, I will try to get a photograph of how the colour looks on the wall. My mum did the second coat last night so it's looking nice and fresh today. I'm not sure if I'll capture it well on a photo as there's no blinds/curtains up yet so the run is full of day light and the sun brightens it lol.

I got the 7.5L from B&Q. If you search it on the website, it tells you if your local store has stock which saved me a few trips about!

@Snowstorming Here we go. It's hard to get a photo of the true colour with all of the shadows in the room at the moment. I'd say the area to the right side of the ladders is a true reflection of how it appears on the wall.

If you line newly plastered walls without sizing them, the plaster will suck up all the paste and make the lining paper shrink. Even if you did size the walls properly, you'll see the seams/overlaps on the lining paper.

Couple of thin coats of matt white emulsion once the plaster is dry and a quick soft sand, and they're ready to paint.

We generally always use Dulux paint. Never let us down yet.

Colour match whatever you want at a Johnstone's Decorating centre. Definitely do not line the walls. We had to because it would have been too expensive to replaster and now have very annoying bubbles on some of the joins.
