Completion day - what to do about bins?

This is definitely a minor issue, but one that I don’t know the answer to.

Our completion day in May falls on a Tuesday. We’re fine with that. Our bins are emptied on a Friday - it alternates between refuse and recycling, so each is only collected once a fortnight.

On completion day, there will be a week and half’s worth of refuse in our bin and it won’t be collected until the Friday after completion day. It’s only three days, but I would feel uncomfortable about the new owners having to put up with our refuse until then. There would not be any food waste in with the refuse - that goes in a separate collection every week, but there would still be food waste left separately too, albeit only a few days’ worth.

Am I overthinking this?

Yes you are overthinking it.
We arrived to a bin so full the lid barely closed and it was still 10 days until bin day!
We had to bag ours and DH had to take it to the local skip/recycling centre. I would have been happy with room to put a few days worth of rubbish in.

eurochick · 20/03/2021 13:13

Overthinking. You're paying the council tax for that property while you are still living there.

stealthninjamum · 20/03/2021 13:25

I'd say it depends what the rubbish is. If I moved into a house and had to empty bags of 'cleanish' rubbish like cardboard / tins I wouldn't mind but I wouldn't be happy if it was bags of nappies.

Midlifephoenix · 20/03/2021 13:59

I took stuff to the dump the day before - there was last minute things that I decided wouldnt/shouldn't go to the new place so it was more than normal household rubbish, but I emptied those bins too.
If you can fit it in the bins then leave it.

FamilyOfAliens · 20/03/2021 15:05

Thanks for all the replies. There wouldn’t be any nappies, just usually things that can’t be recycled.

Good shout about going to the tip as well.

I wish the previous owner of my house was as considerate as you. We even came across a laundry bag in the bathroom with dirty underwear 😩

NoWordForFluffy · 20/03/2021 15:12

Over-thinking, definitely. Just make sure there is room in each bin, as per your usual usage.

I've almost always had to get rid of all sorts of rubbish when I've moved into houses. To have bins with a normal amount of domestic rubbish in for once would be a blessing!

Zig4zag · 20/03/2021 15:14

Yes you are over thinking.

In put both out with whatever happened to be in them last time we moved.

adagio · 20/03/2021 15:18

Leaving it is fine, you are overthinking - but on the subject of taking things to the dump our one (Wales) is now by appointment only due to Covid, and everything has to be recycled / there is no ‘general waste’ skip anymore. I’m yet to fathom what one should do with general waste if the council tip doesn’t take it?

Surprisingly enough there has been a rise in fly tipping. Cant imagine why.

orangejuicer · 20/03/2021 15:19

I would probably bag some of the stinker stuff up into smaller bags and put in local bins on or before completion day and leave the less stinky stuff in double bagged bin bags for bin day.

Chasingsquirrels · 20/03/2021 15:21

This goes one way or the other on MN.
This seems a normal response to me so far, but I've seen threads where people say don't leave anything and you are an awful person if you do.

ShowOfHands · 20/03/2021 15:24

We always leave a note detailing stuff like bin days and local shop opening hours and similar, instructions for appliances etc and I've added a bit before saying sorry but we've left a tiny amount of recycling. I also leave wine and chocolates so figure that they hopefully won't mind too much.

FamilyOfAliens · 20/03/2021 15:25

Thankfully we have a food collection every week (all food, even cooked leftovers) so at least there won’t be mouldy food in the food waste bin. And there’s no meat or fish and it’s all in tied computable bags.

The only smelly thing would be bagged cat poo from our garden which I take to the dog poo bin at the end of the road.

You can tell I’m semi-retired, can’t you? Grin

Yep wayyy too much time in your hands 🤣

I'd take it to the tip if I had to go anyway, but I wouldn't be messing around making an appointment & then waiting for an hour anyway (current situation at ours) to take a bag of normal rubbish.

Leave some space, if you are in good terms with neighbors offer them a going away present.
