Urgent!! Burnt plug

Hello,

I have a double plug socket in my rented house where my boiler and washer (extension lead) are plugged in. Yes i know that they should be seperate plugs and definitely not an extension, but my washer wont reach the plug and my landlord wont fit more plugs.

Anyway, the extension lead where my washer was plugged in has melted the socket, i’m lucky i caught it. My partner switched the plugs, not noticing it was burnt (don’t know how you can’t notice?!) so it’s burnt both. It doesn’t look like it’s damaged the socket but i’m skeptical that it’s safe to use. I can’t get hold of the landlord, but need to plug my boiler back in (the plug that ISN’T melted) what should i do? Is it safe? Both are unplugged and the switches off now. Pics for clarification.

Thank you all for your advice.

This is in my utility area. Would my boiler be ok (temporarily) on a different extension, plugged into a different socket in the kitchen? With nothing else plugged into that socket? As a temporary solution until i can get my landlord to send an electrician? Can’t have no hot water/heating with a baby

Yes, should be fine.

Yes

My boiler is plugged in like this and totally legit, it’s also serviced annually. Think some folks are confused.

Op, uo close that looks like liquid on the sockets. There is defintely drips of brown fluid. Has someone plugged something in wet? Or dropped fluid? Has there been a leak?

I’d not be plugging anything into those as it looks like there’s been damage from water.

Never mind what the electrician's report says, but:

  1. I don't like the look of the burnt plugs at all.
  2. I don't like the idea of extension lead with washing machine at all.
  3. I certainly don't like the lights that keep tripping.

Can't you see the writing on the wall? Do you have to wait for the house to burn down? If you can't get your landlord, then call the council's Health & Safety Dept as a matter of urgency.

As a matter of interest, what's the rating of the boiler and the washer? There should be a sticker (or plate) on each machine somewhere in a remote corner that says (?)watts or (?)w.

Had a burnt plug recently on a tumble dryer which had just stopped working and electrician came and replaced the plug.

Call an electrician from a registered list on internet and get it sorted then give landlord the bill

I wouldn't plug a boiler into same socket as your washing machine.

Also think to ask electrician to install a new wall socket only costs about £60 and isn't as big a job as people think

Comfortzone · 19/03/2021 14:44

I wouldn't wait any longer for landlord

Just call an electrician now - this is an urgent safety issue

Screenshot missed calls on your phone to prove you tried to contact landlord

Then email or text the invoice to your landlord for the electrician's work

If you have a screwdriver Op ? Open up the burnt plug. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone had replaced the fuse in the plug with a screw or nail 😮. I’ve seen it done . ☹️

BobbinThreadbare123 · 19/03/2021 14:54

You can have a boiler on a plug as long as it's not accessible in a 'wet' zone ie bathroom. Don't rely on extension leads!
You should have a copy of the electrical inspection cert, as per www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk/guidance/advice-for-you/landlords/

Some further info on fuses. So WM is 13 amps. Even a kettle is 13. So a boiler definitely. Should be hard wired in my view. I have two all electric houses and mine are.

@presentingpercy, if you had an all electric house, then you didn't have a gas boiler in it, did you?

PresentingPercy · 19/03/2021 23:14

Who said it is a gas boiler? I thought op said “boiler”. I thought it was a fully electric one. I stand corrected if I’ve misunderstood.

PresentingPercy · 19/03/2021 23:16

The op has repeatedly used the term “boiler”. No mention of gas.

PickAChew · 19/03/2021 23:32

You might not be in the UK. At any rate, boilers here tend to be for the central heating and tend to run on gas, occasionally oil. We don't commonly use "boiler" to refer to anything else unless you're a sexist dinosaur talking about your mother on law.

PresentingPercy · 20/03/2021 08:37

I am in the uk. We changed from oil to air source heat pumps. We have all electric in Cornwall too. We have no gas at either house. That’s why I wondered what a boiler was? Even if it’s a gas one, surely hard wired is preferable?

Daftasabroom · 20/03/2021 09:00

Hi OP, the plug is not the original fitted to the WM, the original would have been moulded. The burn mark is under where fuse should be, so either the fuse was incorrect or the plug was badly wired. The plug needs replacing. The socket also needs replacing.

Howzaboutye · 23/03/2021 14:36

Hey OP what was the outcome? Did you get the socket and plug checked?
