outdoor wood burner using existing chimney

We've just had an outhouse demolished that has a chimney. For various reasons the wall the chimney is in and the chimney have to stay.

I fancy turning it into a pizza oven or fitting an outdoor wood burning stove.

We have an esse out door stove. Would I need to line the chimney? Like you do with an indoor woodburner?

No you wouldn't. Sounds like a brilliant plan and some pics would be nice!

Here’s the wall and chimney...it needs a sweep!

It's only an outside chimney, I wouldn't worry overly about sweeping unless you have some brushes.
Only thing I'd be concerned about is structural integrity. Is it fully stable as it is? If so take the render off and check for a lintel which is required to support the stack

Its more supported than the picture makes it look. Builders are happy with it.

It looks a bit like its got a bird nest in it.... its the old laundry chimney.

Breaking news: There is a climate emergency. Burning anything pollutes the planet as much as traffic. "Oh, but I like it" said the person throwing plastic into the sea, and the person poisoning the soil, rivers and underground water supply with chemicals.

I'd have thought kiln dried wood was fairly Sustainable. But thank you.

I have an indoor logburner, means I burn less oil.

heating the outdoors really isn't on if you give a toss about the planet. You may not, of course.

Sounds amazing, Calcot manor hotel has an outdoor fireplace by the hot tub and I fancied copying it (sadly not possible where we live!)

Loofah01 · 20/03/2021 18:06

The walls will make an excellent heat reflector too. Should be a great area when complete :)

Bluntness100 · 20/03/2021 19:28

Can I ask, are you really going to sit outside next to that wall? I’m sure it will look better when painted but I’d only put something there if you’re going to actually use it...

ListeningQuietly · 20/03/2021 19:31

Yes
just yes

Chumleymouse · 20/03/2021 19:42

You could build a bit of a roof of some sort in that corner and it would keep to heat in and make a cosy little area when the nights start dropping colder.

No problem with burning wood, or any other planet wrecking. But only if you do it on your own private planet, with your own private air and water.

RubyViolet · 20/03/2021 21:06

Are you detached or is any of that a party wall ?

Burning wood is climate neutral.

Worry more about the massive rise in dog ownership during this pandemic (with the notable exception of assistance dogs) - they have a massive carbon paw print.

Data from Nordic countries have shown wood smoke to contain particles that are carcinogenic, and particularly dangerous to men.

It’s a lovely idea but I really think it’s very hard to justify having a fire if you have access to central heating.

It’s not just bad for the planet, it’s bad for your family and your neighbours.

MaryIsA · 20/03/2021 22:31

The left hand wall is my neighbours outhouse. The back wall isn’t anyone’s. It’s going to be a paved patio area, with rendered walls and lots of plants and solar lights. Maybe a pergola.
