Ceiling fans

On a thread about why a poster’s house isn’t selling, several people said the presence of ceiling fans was a problem. Why the dislike?

Dust traps, old fashioned, give the house a weird vibe. It wouldn't stop me buying a house, but I'd be removing them pronto.

Yorkshirelass04 · 18/03/2021 22:45

I am a fan of ceilings.

NotABeliever · 18/03/2021 23:06

I was wondering the same OP.
Ok they don't look great but they're so useful in summer. I don't know how they can bring down the price of a property Confused

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/03/2021 01:54

I commented on the other thread with my bewilderment too - I have standard ceiling fan lights and like them. My house is a modern, well insulated, eco house and I still put them in all the main rooms - they save my sanity in summer (can't bear being too hot!) but are more eco-friendly than air con.

They are white and fairly low rise so they don't stand out too much on the white ceilings and are quieter than some of the plug in electric fans I've tried. To be honest, I like the look of them too - they remind me a bit of being on holiday abroad when combined with some of my decor (all white walls and warm looking wood floors - I just need to get a mosquito net for over the bed to complete the look!).

CattyCactus · 19/03/2021 02:01

I’d actually quite like a modern ceiling fan.
Save the bother of dragging out the floor one from storage every summer.
I like the sound of your white one @IamnotwhouthinkIam and I agree about the holiday vibes. I like the sound too.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 19/03/2021 02:27

Thanks @CattyCactus. Unfortunately they are just bog standard looking, reasonably priced ones from B and Q or Homebase (can't remember which), but they came up when I searched for all white, low rise ceiling fans with decent reviews. Glad I didn't splurge on designer ones now, since it seems like most people hate them anyway! Grin

Ha ha - #holidayvibes 🏖

What else about the house is in bad taste? That's what I'm wondering.
Sorry to fans of ceiling fans. Clearly I'm not a fan.

I live in Australia, and ceiling fans are part of my cooling armoury:

  1. Open doors and windows
  2. If that doesn't work, ceiling fans
  3. If that doesn't work: air con

In winter I put the fans on reverse to lower heating bills.

isthismylifenow · 19/03/2021 05:55

Living in a hot country, if there wasn't a ceiling fan I would think it odd.

I have one of those fugly ones with the string pull in my bedroom, it does the job, Ill change it eventually. But there are some really nice ones, the dc have them in their rooms. The blades fold away when its turned off (has a remote control), has 4 different light settings and a bluetooth speaker in it. It looks like a normal light unless it is being used.

renovationfatigue · 19/03/2021 07:16

I don't love the look but we inherited them in our old house and I loved it in the bedroom. I had it on all year round and couldn't sleep without it.

JohnandMary · 19/03/2021 12:44

I’m in Australia too @echt and need some kind of fan or aircon for most of the year. Aircon costs a bomb and stand fans are a lot more ugly than ceiling fans. Have dark wood fans in the bedrooms to match the dark wood floors and the (hopefully) Caribbean/colonial styling and I think they look great. But we’re all different.

Hushpuppy1 · 19/03/2021 16:23

Ceiling fans are a great alternative to AC on those days when it’s a bit too warm in the house but a gentle breeze is sufficient for comfort. I really dislike having to close up the house for the AC so I like our ceiling fans.
I think it would be ridiculous to reject a house because of ceiling fans. And it absolutely does not indicate ancient wiring.

Floralnomad · 19/03/2021 16:29

We have a modern ceiling fan in my daughters bedroom and it’s excellent in the summer months and it is no more of a dust trap than any other light really .

@Floralnomad @isthismylifenow
Can you link to yours please?
I am looking for some for the bedrooms. (Hope you don't mind me asking OP!)

BrilliantBetty · 19/03/2021 22:11

Ripped one out of our 'new' house last summer. Must have been at least 20 years old. It was enormous. I thought it was hideous, unsure if safe and hard to clean.

But if we get another heatwave like last year, I'll be tempted to have a ceiling fan reinstated! It's a very warm house - I see why they had it.

pilates · 19/03/2021 22:20

How ridiculous to say a property wouldn’t sell due to ceiling lights

@ANewDawnANewDay ours is the Hanki one from B&Q ,.

Like another poster on that thread, I used to put my bedroom ceiling fans up June - September and replace them with nicer light fittings the rest of the time as it’s a ten minute job. They aren’t attractive - which is why I didn’t keep them permanently. We now have an air con unit in the bedroom and it isn’t attractive either.

The house in that thread was nice enough - clean and tidy and obviously a family home (and the OP took feedback on board and was gracious enough to ignore the spiteful comments from people who just wanted to be unkind) but it needed a bit of cosmetic work and I suppose the ceiling fans just added to the idea of something that would have to be changed. I’m always surprised at the number of people who think that this sort of thing is major work which needs an electrician, and I suppose that’s what puts some people off.
