Amtico / Karndean / wood

We are looking to replace our old, very damaged engineered oak floors throughout 2x living rooms, dining room and hallway. We are looking at wood but also wondering about Amtico and Karndean as so easy to look after and stay looking perfect. Has anyone done this when they don't have to (I mean it's not a kitchen or bathroom). We can afford wood so it's not for budget, I'm just wondering about pros and cons or any reasons why we "shouldn't" get the Amtico.

We had Karndean Korlok put in our new kitchen a few years ago and I love it. We’re pretty lazy about mopping up spills immediately and the floor looks as good as the day it was installed.

I’m now planning to put the same flooring in the hallway as we have a dog and I want something that is more durable and won’t stain (it’s currently carpet). I think real wood is beautiful, but it has to work for your lifestyle. I can’t be bothered worrying about scratches or spills so it’s karndean all the way for me Smile

We have karndean everywhere except the stairs and landing. Warm underfoot, easy to clean and maintain and looks brilliant even years later

FishWithoutABike · 18/03/2021 10:02

I think fake wood is like fake plants. When you know they are fake it feels different. I hated our Amtico and it showed up every crumb.

Trinacham · 18/03/2021 10:05

Love our Karndean. It has only been installed for 16 months but so far so good. We have it in our hallway and kitchen/diner. Would recommend it.

Trinacham · 18/03/2021 10:06

lounge/diner* rather

Sorry to jump on somebody else’s thread but is anyone willing to post a picture of their karndean? I prefer to see stuff like that in real houses rather than the pictures on the website as it shows what it looks like without perfect lighting etc

Wood

I hate fake looking wood floor

We have Amtico throughout the house and it's been amazing, really hard wearing. However, it's a modern house. If I had an older property I would have opted for wood.

Indecisivelurcher · 18/03/2021 21:34

Following!
We've got Karndean in the living room, was here when we moved in. It's good. Warm underfoot. We've scratched it so it's not indestructible.
Will need to decide what to get in our back extension.
I don't know what Karndean is made from. Is it environmentally friendly?

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 18/03/2021 21:36

We've got Amtico, Karndean and Polyflor in various places around the house. Most people think it's wood and it's easy to look after. We've got original parquet in one room and it looks great, but there are visible scratches and some small dents where things have been dropped. I'd go for LVT if I were you.

wandawombat · 18/03/2021 21:36

I've got Amtico & original oak parquet. One looks amazing but it scratches & shows all the dirt. The other is practical & suits the kitchen...

Think my DH would Amtico the whole ground floor, given the chance.

MumUndone · 18/03/2021 21:40

It's vinyl flooring. I doubt the manufacturing process is environmentally friendly.

LadyFuschia · 18/03/2021 21:41

Following, and would also love to see photos. Thinking of putting wood / wood effect in the hall but not sure of all the options.

LuluJakey1 · 18/03/2021 21:41

We have Karndean parquet in our kitchen diner and I think it is rubbish. The table and chairs have felt on the bottoms of the legs as recommended and the floor is scratched from the felt. I don't find it at all hardwearing. It has also scratched in the door area and in other places just with normal use. It's not 3 years old.I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Finzi · 18/03/2021 21:46

We have a lot of Amtico which has been in the house since before we bought it. It’s probably been down over 25 years. It still looks amazingly good! There are a few scratches but they are not that noticeable. It’s incredibly hard-wearing stuff.

MothershipG · 18/03/2021 21:49

Can you guess what my floor is? 😁

ApplestheHare · 18/03/2021 21:51

MothershipG is it Karndean?

I'm a big Karndean fan. It's done really well for us in a couple of houses.

MothershipG · 18/03/2021 21:58

@ApplestheHare Me too, but the budget was tight so we were recommended Polyflor & I'm very happy with it. 😁

SkankingMopoke · 18/03/2021 22:09

We have Amtico in the kitchen, dining room, and play room. We have not treated it kindly, but it's still looking like new 4.5yrs later. It can apparently be re-dressed if the surface gets overly scuffed up, but we've not needed to look into this yet. My only regret is the colour - a very dark grey tile effect that shows every crumb!
We have engineered wood floors in the hall and living room. The hall was installed just a few months before the Amtico, and is showing far more signs of wear. It's still fine, but full of little pits where grit has made its way into the house and the odd scratch. It has also aged more in the part exposed to light, so there is a very obvious rug outline when I lift it to clean. The living room has parquet, which I installed during the Spring lockdown last year. So far it is wearing well but already has a couple of dents. Both wood floors hide crumbs well (and don't therefore look permanently unclean), but the parquet is by far the best at this. Both the wood and Amtico floors feel equally warm/cold under foot IMO.

hartof · 18/03/2021 22:13

We had Karndean fitted in September and love it! This is ours which is knight tile lime washed oak

@MumUndone

It's vinyl flooring. I doubt the manufacturing process is environmentally friendly.
They nearly all contain recycled materials though.
IstandwithJackieWeaver · 18/03/2021 22:18

That's lovely @hartof - I see the cat approves.

Hullaballoonexperience · 18/03/2021 22:22

We also have Karndean. It still looks good after 5 years but it is scratched quite badly in places, has lots of gaps in the plank fitting and is going a bit green near the bifold doors so do have some reservations about it.

Daydreamsinglorioustechnicolor · 18/03/2021 22:27

I'm in an upstairs flat and want to move my little kitchen in to what is now a dining room. But I think it wouldn't be fair to downstairs to have a hard floor over what is a reception room for them. I'll be looking for something like this for practicality but hopefully more sound proof.
