Carpet fitter damage

Hi, please help! We moved in August and had our ceilings plastered and painted just before Christmas. Yesterday we had local carpet fitters replace the threadbare carpet on the stairs and in the kids rooms. Where they hammered the carpet in around the corner at the top of the stairs they have come through the plasterboard underneath!

We were pretty good about the 7 holes in our newly decorated ceiling as they were only young lads and really apologetic. They took photos to send their boss but we didn't hear anything from him so I called him today and not only did he not apologise but he said the fault is with our house and the plasterboard being too close to the stairs and there was no way they could have known that would happen in advance.

The upshot is that "as a good will gesture" they will pay half of the repairs. Does this sound right? They've put holes in our wall but it's the fault of our house?! We are pretty clueless but shouldn't they be insured for damage caused?

We'd like to know where we stand here. I'll try to attach a photo to show what happened.

Any advice gratefully received!

I think you are right to question whether it’s your fault or not but for the sake of argument, time to resolve this and the fact it’s probably a quick and cheap job to put right, I’d accept the offer.

Has that plasterboard been there during the threadbare carpet times ?

If so, they should be ‘making good’ the damage.
The 50/50 offer in the costs is a dare.

Thanks both, I agree the hassle of arguing is probably not worth it and we don't have the energy to fight him. But he's a fool because we won't be having them back to do the rest of the carpets, which is a big job and we will be leaving reviews with pictures of what happened. Overall this is a risky dare on their behalf. Thanks so much again for replying!

@itsawonderfullife79 you are being very unfair. The damage has not been caused by something 'coming through' the ceiling. The damage is the plasterboard pins which are used to attach the plasterboard to the ceiling after which the board is plastered. It's a fairly common problem that the plaster over the pins becomes dislodged particularly when there is disturbance or vibration for example the carpet fitters banging the carpet into the risers.

You just need to polyfilla over and paint.

In order to recover damages you need to show negligence and it does not appear they have not been negligent.

Oldandcobwebby · 20/03/2021 10:33

They were not negligent, and the only damage is bits of plaster coming off over the nails that hold the plasterboard up. Five minutes and some Polyfilla would put it right. You are making a mountain out of a molehill here. Threatening to leave bad reviews over is wholly unreasonable and makes you look really unpleasant.

Somanysocks · 20/03/2021 11:45

I think you're being pretty unreasonable to do bad reviews, those holes would probably have happened over time anyway, it's quite common especially where there is a lot of movement, as happens on stairs.

This.

It’s a £10 max repair that will take an hour and absolutely isn’t their fault.

Asking for damages? Catch yourself on. 🤣🤣🤣

Exactly the same thing happened to us. We just filled, sanded and repainted. Honestly, it’s not a lot of effort to rectify.

We were happy with the carpets and are having the company back to fit more. Please do not leave a negative review for this, it’s really not the fitters fault. If you want to blame anyone, blame whoever fitter the stairs.

MillyMolly123 · 20/03/2021 12:03

*blame whoever FITTED the stairs (or whoever put the plasterboard up).

Theunamedcat · 20/03/2021 12:05

Sorry and a nice attitude would have gone down better than a blame shift and a lot of sarcasm

IndecentFeminist · 20/03/2021 12:05

I'm not sure they've done anything wrong there. You say you are clueless, but hopefully now you'll see that this is just something for you to deal with and move on?

itsawonderfullife79 · 20/03/2021 13:14

OK thanks for your feedback. Now we know they are being fair of course we won't leave a negative review. It was just a bit of a shock to us and the young fitters at the time! We have moved on, don't worry and thanks again to those who have put us straight in the matter, that was after all the purpose of the post. Xx
