DIY kitchens

I had a fitter lined up to fit a DIY kitchen.

He's the second guy I'd found as the first one was really pushing Howdens and Benchmarx and it was £££.

Fitter has just messaged with this, decking the job:

I've not fitted a DIY kitchen before so I spoke to someone in the industry and they didn't have very good things to say about them and I'll be honest it put me off.

So now I have to find someone else.

I've only heard good things (mostly on here) so is there any truth to this?

It sounds like he just didn't want the job and that was the best excuse he could come up with at short notice. No decent kitchen fitter would respond in that way.

FWIW my builder was amazed by the quality of the DIY Kitchens units we fitted and has used them in his son's flat as a result.

I have a DIY kitchens utility room and kitchen. Utility fitted 5 years ago and kitchen 3 years ago. All fitted by my husband and planned and ordered by me. Had no problems fitting it, they left off some panels from the delivery so they had to resend them but I would use them again anytime I needed a new kitchen.
We had previously fitted a Wickes kitchen in a prior house and everything needed building, and it was harder to fit. My husband is a software engineer not a builder but he fitted it fine. Looks amazing, quality is so much better than others we looked at.

DH fitted ours whilst the builders were finishing off our extension and they do kitchen fitting all the time, we just wanted to save money. They were so impressed that the site manager ordered one for his own kitchen.

what we did was got wickes to do a measure and plan and then that gave us a better idea of what we wanted then transfered our ideas and measurements to DIYS online planner took that to the shop they went through it and tweeked it to bits we had missed or bits we didnt need , then went home did the order online and one of their consultants went through it one last time before the order went to final

My partner fitted ours, he's handy but had never fitted a kitchen before. We're also both very fussy and no complaints from either of us. You must measure super carefully and triple check the order. We went to the showroom several times to check how things were supposed to look. We missed a few bits (end panels, kick boards) and they took a little while to arrive but they don't charge the same whopping delivery fee for little bits like that. We're thinking of getting cupboards in our shed and would get DIY again. Agree that your fitter doesn't fancy the job now for whatever reason, all trades are mega busy at the moment and can pick and choose jobs.

Really good quality. I have put in 2 kitchens in the last few years - one from Wickes, the other from DIY - the DIY is much better quality and was considerably cheaper. I fitted them both myself and the DIY was easier because it came pre-assembled. There were a few tiny issues with the custom paint doors (couple had little imperfections) but they swapped for new ones quickly and with no fuss.
@greengrey, Have you ordered your DIY kitchen yet? I'm on there just now trying to plan mine and it says they're not taking orders for the integrated appliances, just the carcasses. Did that happen to you? if I can't get the appliances from DIY is there another supply company that would have the right sized appliances to install with the kitchen?

I've been looking at IKEA kitchens but TBH I don't like the details such as wine racks, deep top cupboards etc. I think there would be a lot of work to be done by the fitter to get it right. DIY has so many options that I think I'm sold on them but I don't want to order anything if I can't source appliances!!!

p.s. I'd be very interested to hear how you're progressing with your kitchen and if you have found a fitter.
They just don’t have white goods for sale .

Autumngoldleaf · 22/09/2021 13:38

I'd always be wary of ordering white goods from kitchen places
