We are having our house extended at the rear double storey and front single storey. We cannot move out as cant afford 6 months rent. Can anyone share their experience how to survive building work whilst living in the house. Thank you.

So far work front foundation has been done. And rear floor and walls have been done. Waiting for roof. Then I think they will start breaking the wall at rear.

We are starting a similar job in April ( large single front extension and a smaller 1st floor extension over an existing flat roof. I have been told that the first actual building work will not really be a problem as it’s all outside existing house. When we get to bathrooms and the hallway we might need to go away for a couple of weeks if it’s in the holidays. If kids are at school and I can escape out. It will be fine as work usually finishes at about 3/4.

HasaDigaEebowai · 16/03/2021 19:27

It’s hell, don’t do it. Treat it as a cost of the build. I’m currently living in a house full of dust. It gets everywhere.

MaryIsA · 16/03/2021 19:28

Ear plugs. Do you still have a kitchen?

Pack away as much as you can. Even int9 storage, as the dust gets everywhere.

LaMariposa · 16/03/2021 19:33

We are planning an extension in our new house. If/when it happens we are going to move me and the children out to my parents, and DH will be left to survive home alone 😂 At least for a couple of weeks when they knock through.

hhsa · 16/03/2021 19:35

The kitchen will be ripped out eventually. I wouldnt mind going for a walk when they do the noisy bits. Kids are back at school, so that's good.

Is it not possible to seal the doors to stop the dust spreading?

I think I wont mind the knock through it's the surviving without the kitchen that worries me.

I think you’re being a little naive about the level of noise and disruption if you’re talking about “going for a walk when they do the noisy bits.

Has anyone lived in during a build. What's it like? I have 4 kids uni college secondary and primary school age.

I'm still finding builders dust 5 years on. It was 2 inches thick on the kitchen work surfaces the day they cut the door through to the garage !!!

Slightlydustcovered · 16/03/2021 19:50

We did it and knocked through a week before the first lockdown. Must admit it wasn't fun with 2 preschool children, but we survived. We struggled to find anywhere to go as everything was closed so just juggled everything with the builder. Bathing in a bucket in the front room was normal for far too long. And we set up our camping kitchen in the lounge too. Out the other end now and all is forgotten ( mostly). My only advice if you do this is plan for the worst. Dust will be everywhere, you will eat rubbish as will have no proper kitchen for a lot longer than you think. I think that helped as I was never disappointed. We had so many delays over lockdown. As a positive I was always here so picked up on lots of little things before they became an issue. And by the end I had a great relationship with the building crew. Would I do it again?yes. but I would move out for key bits including noise from demolition, we couldn't in lockdown but that was never the original plan.

Watching with interest... I know every job is different, but I'd also be interested to know how long people's houses were full on building sites..

BananaHammock23 · 16/03/2021 19:52

We've recently had an extension and had planned on living in our house throughout the 10 weeks we were doing the work. Within a week we had agreed to forgo the doors I wanted to rent somewhere. It's unbearable, I can't even imagine how unbearable it would've been with children. You can't seal rooms off to stop dust, it gets everywhere. Honestly I think you should reconsider. It will be a nightmare.

MindyStClaire · 16/03/2021 19:53

Oh and stupid question - did you have a washing machine? We're not touching our kitchen but the utility will have a lot done.

newyorky09 · 16/03/2021 19:55

We have just started a house extension too and I’m feeling very nervous about the knocking through stage! For people who have lived through it- if all the knocking through is downstairs and doors upstairs are shut will dust still get in the bedrooms?! I’m thinking I could maybe I could sellotape dust sheets over the doors?

Notavegan · 16/03/2021 20:00

Having lived through a loft conversion last year (underestimated the disruption) I would also be adding rental to a any extension cost. Sorry probably not what you wanted to hear. It won't just be a few hours of noisy stuff. The workmen took over, the dust took over (and it was only a loft).

Slightlydustcovered · 16/03/2021 20:01

We had no choice but to stay due to the pandemic. Please believe me when I say dust WILL get everywhere. We camped in the garden just so we could sleep in non dusty bedding. You can survive it we did but I would think long and hard about your thresholds before you try it. Or at least have a get out plan for when it's too much. You also have to consider it will slow the work down. The builders can't just knock stuff about and crack on as the house has to keep some of its function.

I'm not worried about losing the washing machine. We have a laundrette round the corner.

We did it during lockdown last year, both working full time plus home schooling.

Definitely buy some of the plastic doors that you seal with tape over each doorway, then they have a zippered door set into them. The dust gets EVERYWHERE!! I boxed up as much as possible as well. The bathroom needed cleaning a lot more as it's grim sitting on thick dust to go to the toilet.

WaterBottle123 · 16/03/2021 20:22

I did a rear and side two story extension last year.

Move out. You will be without a kitchen and bathroom for weeks. There will be dust SO MUCH DUST, the water and electrics will need turning off ALOT, Your stuff will be all stacked up in your remaining rooms...

Just move out.

The dust gets EVERYWHERE. I don't know how it's possible but it is. We taped up every single door and there was still dust.

As I said, we are currently doing it. It’s awful. We will move out next week for a few weeks over the worst of it. Everything is filthy already and until yesterday they weren’t inside. Tomorrow they’re taking down a solid wall. I’m not looking forward to it at all.

Africa2go · 16/03/2021 20:53

Hi we did a double storey extension and quite a bit of refiguring of the space - we had a front sitting room, 1 main bedroom and 1 single room that weren't touched - everything else was included in the building works.

Family of 5 (3 primary school children at them time). Ours took about 6 months and we lived here throughout. If we could have rented somewhere locally cheaply, I would have done that - but we were looking at in excess of £10k plus a 2nd lot of bills and it was just too much. I don't think living here slowed the build down at all, I was usually on hand to ask questions / check things / point out issues that could be solved quickly. I think as long as you have good builders, it shouldn't matter.

Kitchen - we had a slow cooker / George Foreman / microwave for meals, had made & frozen lots of meals beforehand (plus takeaways, obviously!). Also had one of those little plug in single rings which was very handy. Just had to be organised and a bit more inventive! Washing up in the bath wasn't as much fun!!

Yes to the dirt and dust, it will get everywhere even if you have dust sheets taped to doors etc. Include a new hoover in your budget, you'll wreck the one you have. We also rented a storage unit - so all our furniture, other than the essentials went into storage to protect it, along with lots of kitchen stuff etc.

It was worth it in the end!
