Clueless about Broadband / Landline / what I need!

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 14/03/2021 18:02

I will soon be moving into a new house and am absolutely clueless about what I need.

So, looking at EE, for example. I could get Fibre PLus / Fibre Broadband, or 4GEE Home Router which provides Intenet via 4GEE so says no need for a landline.

So for the other services, would I need an additional landline? Through BT, for example?

Do I need a landline for anything other than a landline phone number?

I want to be able to use broadband for computer - 2 or 3 people in the house, be able to connect to things like Netflix, iPlayer etc.

Any advice?

If the signal where you are going is up to it, then you would not need a landline with that. I bet they will charge you accordingly as you will be captive. I checked what it would cost me, allegedly it would work (!) But my bill would go up 30%.

The reason for a landline is reliability ( doesn't need mains power so works in a power cut, which will become more common as our infrastructure creaks) and clarity, talking on mobiles is hard work.

Ps looks like they can give you calls and so presumably a landline number. If you have older relatives they may prefer that, although BT do now include calls to mobiles in their expensive packages.

An additional landline seems to increase the cost a lot though.

I am now looking at NowTV that offers SuperFibre plus free line rental - so is that a landline?

(see how hopeless I am!) It seems a good deal!

If you have a landline you will get a landline number, we got one when we reconnected the phone line, we’ve never used it ( not even sure what it is ) as we don’t have a home phone. The line is only used for the broadband.

Chumleymouse · 14/03/2021 23:19

Yes line rental means a landline.

StanfordPines · 14/03/2021 23:20

I have Virgin. We have broadband and tv but no landline. We had one for a while but we only ever got scam calls. I’ve not missed it once.

Wilsonwilson · 14/03/2021 23:23

I have sky fibre broadband, it does come with a land-line which is rarely used. £27 a month

thenightsky · 14/03/2021 23:28

Are you somewhere that has fibre to your nearest cabinet? There is no point in paying for something fancy if you are out in the sticks on copper wire.

PigletJohn · 14/03/2021 23:30

I have Virgin, I hear it is the fastest domestic supplier. I get just over 100Mbps

But expensive, and not all districts have it.

They throw in cable TV, and a phone.

You’ll pay line rental if you’re having standard broadband (ie not mobile broadband like 4GEE) regardless of whether you have a landline or not. It’s the cost to you of maintaining the line that brings you internet/phone. So for example we use satellite broadband because we are rural and BT is the only other rubbish option, so we don’t need to pay it for the internet. However we also need a landline for work so we have a phone only contact with BT which includes line rental. Line rental doesn’t mean you HAVE to have a landline, it just means that a) the cost of maintaining your line which carries internet is covered and b) you could have one if you wanted.

As an aside we had the 4GEE router on trial for a brief period two years ago and it was great. Data is limited though (or it was back then, we didn’t go any further after the trial as it was more ££ than the satellite broadband we did go with). Only any good if you get good 4GEE signal though!

We get 350Mbps. I know right!
