Order of works: advice needed

Hi

We bought an old property and hired a builder to renovate for us. Unfortunately, we ran out of money (large, unforeseen problems) and, although all the building work has been completed, we are only just now in the position to finish the interior. But I just don't know which order the remaining work needs to be done.

We need to:

  1. Rehang all doors (including attaching the fittings).
  2. Paint said doors (have been dipped and primed).
  3. Build built in wardrobes in bedrooms.
  4. Build built in cabinets in lounge.
  5. Paint throughout (including sanding, filling in holes etc.). The walls already have a mist coat. However, the skirting, moulding around the doorways, bannisters, window woodwork etc. all need stripping/sanding etc.

I assume carpenter/joiner first to build the wardrobes/cabinets, as they will need to be painted. Do the doors need hanging first, or are they better off off for ease of painting and then hung?

Who hangs doors? A joiner, or "handyman"? Would a painter and decorator strip paint (old house with original paint which has chipped off in a lot of places)?

We had originally contracted our builder to do this, but we weren't overly happy with them, so don't want them back.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Are you doing these things yourself or getting someone in?

If your getting someone in then I'd get the cupboards all built (carpenter) they would prob fit doors for you and then get someone in to paint it all.
A good painter and decorator will do all prep work for you..... but obviously charge you for it.

If doing yourself you can buy/hire a paint sprayer and spray the doors before hanging. You could possibly the spray the wardrobes as well, depending on whether you can protect other areas.

Thanks for replying. Definitely getting people in. I can't face the volume of work needed to be done.

Pretty much what willow said^ but just to say I’ve painted a fair few doors and never felt the need to have them taken off to get a good finish. If anything, hanging when they’ve just been painted may mean the finish will get scuffed as they’re being hung. Maybe.

Also to say that stripping old layers off skirting etc can be a complete nightmare, esp if it’s many layers over decades, lead based paint (if it’s really old) is really not pleasant to sand or torch off. I’d fill wherever possible myself.
