I've woken this morning thinking about the paintings on my walls.Alot are by my mother which mainly consist of floral, horses in countryside settings, dark and moody thirties style paintings of guys in trilby hats, ladies sipping cocktails at a bar and buildings again dark and moody.Lots of browns with the occasional colourful type like Wimbledon theatre sprinkled here and there. But I can't get themes going because the different sizes just don't go together. When I look at houses on Rightmove I'm immediately drawn to the paintings on the walls.Houses without just look a bit to neutral for me.Am I wrong should I sell with neutral white walls and relegate my mothers painting to the garage.Does it even matter when your selling a house?

I think fewer is better, so if you can take a few down and tart up the walls behind that might not be a bad idea.

Thanks. That has backed up my view that I think it's nice to have some paintings on the wall but not too many.I actually took alot down today and hung florals in one room, thirties pictures in another and so on because given it can take six months not happy looking at white walls that I've started freshening up to day.The wife insists on taking kids pictures down some framed which I thought would make the house look friendlier but she's the boss so cant argue with that SmileThankyou MarylsA.

I have just looked at House snd Gardens on their web site and they show a whole myriad of ways to display art. White background isn’t necessary nor is just a few. In fact big groupings look great. A whole wall of paintings!

Buyers need to be able to concentrate on the room they're viewing. Going 'neutral' is advised because there's less chance of putting most buyers off. But one or two (pleasant? :D) paintings should be okay.

Excellent. But I've seen a few on Rightmove with naked lady art.I'm not sure how I feel about that ,I know dodgy ground here, but leaves me confused about how I feel about the house.Would they look great in a big group.

Ok.I've left about five/six in each room and the hallway because our house is a copy of a 3 bed cottage. It's all brown beams ,angled roofs just thought it would help the sale if a bit of colour is displayed. Thanks for the advice think I'll take some downSmile, minamilise a tad.

I have a huge collection of paintings, some quite abstract, one very large in orange and blue. I know how to hang them though, and they coordinate within each room design.
However if they are not extreme in subject (graphic nudity etc), then art is much more preferable to blank walls. Family photos not so much, though I have not removed the two areas that I have.
I think decluttering surfaces is more important.
