I am replacing my front door. What are peoples experience with composite front doors?

A couple of friends in my road with similar houses have them. They are secure, warm and my friends are pleased with them. I think they look horrible, cheap and plasticy, they certainly weren't cheap.
My next door neighbour has replaced her with a wooden door and it looks perfect.

We are in London and when we got quotes for our door replacement, a wooden door was over the twice the price of the 'best' composite (and that included 20% off the wooden door!) Our house is a 1910 end of terrace - not massively 'period' in any way so we didnt think composite detracted much. The composite has made the hallway much warmer and i feel very secure with it in place.

I bought a Solidor. It wasn’t cheap and it’s the smartest door in the road! It’s not plasticky and it’s solid and well made. I have an oak door on my own house. That’s great too but cost more. You can buy a cheaper wood door and keep painting it. However I was very pleased with my composite door but it was £1350 with fitting and door furniture.

Also have a Solidor - to be honest, whilst I wanted something that wouldn't look out of place on a 1930s semi, having been burgled when a wooden door was kicked in, security was my Number 1 priority. Did quite a bit of research and narrowed it down to Rock Doors and Solidors. Opted for Solidor. Feels solid, safe, and thoroughly recommended.

When I saw the timber door in the show room I would go as far as say it was beautiful which isn’t the case for the composite. However, it’s a thousand times nicer than the upvc one which is currently in. And I don’t really want to have the hassle of repainting when it looks tatty, sticking in wet weather and the security of composite is reassuring.
But I do agree that timber is beautiful

We have a bespoke composite door so all exterior parts are wood but the inside is whatever they put in composite doors. So...it looks like a solid wood door but won't warp. Good joinery/carpentry companies will make you whatever you want. We had ours made extra wide as we were renovating the front of the house. Love it.

Comefromaway · 10/03/2021 21:48

I’ve just had a Solidor fitted. I love it.

Invisiblewoman1 · 13/03/2021 13:55

Has anyone had an apeer composite door?

For those who had solidor - what colour did you go for?

Really pleased with mine. Really solid and fits beautifully. I chose a peacock blue and a traditional style. The fitter traced some original stained glass windows from elsewhere in the house and replicated that in the glass panel.

Comefromaway · 13/03/2021 17:29

Mine is peacock blue too.

We have a duck egg blue Solidor. We used their online door builder tool and haven’t yet come across anyone else with the same design. Lots of people have said how much they like it.

cansu · 13/03/2021 18:23

Bought a solidor one in Painswick. Looks lovely and has improved house and warmth inside no end. Old timber one became warped and needs upkeep and painting etc. Cost around 1200 and a. V happy with it.

Invisiblewoman1 · 13/03/2021 18:35

Oh thank you for the photo and all your colours. The peacock blue looks lovely!
I’m considering painswick or midnight blue but so hard without seeing them properly

That’s what I was afraid of. In normal times I could have gone to the showroom and seen the colours in person. But I took a risk and it paid off.

Comefromaway · 13/03/2021 18:46

The midnight colour wasn’t available in the door style I chose otherwise that might have been a contender for me too.

BellaMoo · 13/03/2021 18:47

We’ve just had a solider fitted in twilight grey - it was less than half the price of a similar wooden door and feels very secure. The company who fitted it had colour samples which were helpful.

cansu · 13/03/2021 18:55

The Painswick is a very little pale green colour.

cansu · 13/03/2021 18:56

Light not like

cansu · 13/03/2021 18:57

Mine is a cottage style door with a diamond plain glass bulls eye and a door knocker in black.

PickAChew · 13/03/2021 19:01

Our solidor is black. It's avast improvement over the warped, peeling timber door it replaced. There was a fairly limited colour range in the style we wanted so chose the black as a contrast to white painted pebbledash.

TommyShelby · 14/03/2021 01:24

Our composite door is navy and I think it looks quite smart. I got fed up of having a bruised shoulder from having to barge in the old warped wooden door! And it lets much more light into the hallway which is a bonus

We had something very similar to @TommyShelby’s installed yesterday, except ours has a grid of glass on the top half.

I love it.

The company came to our house to quote. He stood outside and had samples of the different glasses with him.

Pancake4life · 14/03/2021 08:06

loved our Rock door and felt very safe

stuckinarutatwork · 14/03/2021 08:18

I considered one to replace our structurally sound but badly yellowed white uPVC door. All the quotes were so expensive so we decided to paint the old door instead. Absolutely amazing! It looks fab - like new. I went for a dark grey paint for the door, white for the frame and replaced the brass coloured letterbox and handle with nice new chrome ones. Total cost for paint, brushes and chrome door furniture was about £50!

Invisiblewoman1 · 14/03/2021 08:25

Thank you all- all these doors sound amazing!!
I am going for a Victorian 4 panel door with antique black door furniture. I’m glad to see so many people happy with their solidor - that’s reassuring
