Hello me choose a light fitting

Hi all, currently having our bathroom ripped out. It's been a long time coming and have ended up living with the previous owners grey suite and pink floral tiles for far too long.

It's an Edwardian semi and we've reinstated and uncovered lots of original features Atkins the house.

Bathroom will be black/charcoal and white Victorian type patterned floor tiles, half white metro with trim, F&B Hague blue at the top, roll top bath, classic style basin and toilet. All brassware is antique brushed gold/brass. I need to choose a ceiling light and I'm a bit stuck. Do I go industrial or stick to a more traditional look? Need it delivered within a week or so.
A couple of pictures of things I've looked at

Is there some reason not to put ceiling down lighters in as they give excellent light whereas a fitting in the middle will cast shadows . Poor for doing make up on a dark morning. I imagine you can get downlighter fittings in a variety of finishes.

polkadotpixie · 10/03/2021 05:46

Definitely the second one, I really like the industrial look

Monty27 · 10/03/2021 05:51

Definitely the middle light.
Make sure a proper electrician fits it though it might need specific wiring as it's the bathroom.
I love the industrial look too 👍🏻

ConstanceGracy · 10/03/2021 08:08

Are these suitable for the bathroom? You may need to check as a couple look like steam could get in.

LightOfMyLife21 · 10/03/2021 11:36

Oh good, I think that is my favourite but wasn't sure if it was more for a kitchen.
Electrician will be doing the wiring.

@Countmeout I have a dressing table in a big bay window in the bedroom where I do my make up where there's plenty of natural light do don't have to worry about that aspect in the bathroom

You have to make sure they are at least ip44 rating, or even higher if in ‘wet’ zones.

Saz12 · 10/03/2021 12:15

I’m not sure these would be safe in a bathroom?

LightOfMyLife21 · 10/03/2021 18:21

The one I've chosen is none of the 3 above, they were examples of some things I'd seen and different styles I was considering. It's not in a wet zone, a lot more than 60cm from any water source and our ceilings are almost 3m so it's a long way from any water, according to the zones doesn't need to be even IP44. We've also got an extractor directly above the shower. Regardless I've chosen one that is IP44. But thank you for your concerns.

Have you seen industville lights? I don't know about bathrooms as such but they are like the industrial next one but a lot cheaper. Good luck with it all

LondonStone · 10/03/2021 21:48

Definitely middle!

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 11/03/2021 00:47

I don’t think any of the really look like bathroom lights?

CattyCactus · 11/03/2021 02:39
  1. Looks like a lounge light
  2. Kitchen light
  3. Hall light

None look like bathroom lights to me

NotwatchingSpooks · 11/03/2021 15:10

Personally I would go for led down lights

Seamouse · 11/03/2021 17:10

I got a special bathroom chandelier like this one www.litecraft.co.uk/vara-3-light-bathroom-chandelier-chrome?gclid=Cj0KCQiAnKeCBhDPARIsAFDTLTIpj2BtKr0Sp3rDdDHMhbsN-YULicDzcRC8vB7iPmBnub1zHTwb3owaArKFEALw_wcB thinking I was being classy and in-keeping with the period vibe.

It’s a PITA. Dark and light shadows everywhere. One bulb or another is always blown and, oh my....the dust and grime build up is 10x more than any other light fitting in the house. It’s even worse than the kitchen. Takes ages to clean all the individual parts (not that I bother much).

I would go for something completely enclosed and smooth. Use other features/touches in the room. Towels, art etc. I have a really nice print that was bathroom mounted by a picture framers.

KingdomScrolls · 14/03/2021 10:43

The OP has already said she didn't choose any of the above they were just examples of different styles.
I don't have downlights/spotlights in my bathroom, I really don't like them. We have this (middle one) and it works well with the high ceilings, we also have an Edwardian semi and prefer a more traditional style, it gives out plenty of light, we do also have a large window in the bathroom

I get that you want it all to look in keeping, that a modern bathroom will be far from that, and I love the look of this period stuff - but I hope you have a cleaner or at least a wife. Free standing baths, ceramics with twiddly bits and decorated light fittings went out for a reason.

if downlights, no holes in the ceiling. Great way to let condensation go round the house. Bear in mind you will get older and need more light.

It will look beautiful when it first goes in...

SecretOfChange · 14/03/2021 11:38

None of these look like they're bathroom lights to me (even if safe). Cleaning will be a nightmare. I'd rethink the whole idea unless it's for a mansion. It only makes sense if you have a massive size bathroom with very high ceilings and a team of cleaners coming regularly.

OldLang · 14/03/2021 11:46

but I hope you have a cleaner or at least a wife

Christ Hmm

LightOfMyLife21 · 14/03/2021 11:56

@murbblurb I'm not sure why you've assumed I'm male and if I was, why it would be my wife's responsibility to do the cleaning? My husband and I share chores equally and as he's 6'4 it's like he will be the one cleaning light fixtures. It's not a job I would ask our cleaner to do, and she's been shielding for nearly a year now anyway and as we've managed perfectly well I'm not entirely sure she'll be coming back.
I'm 35 so a long way off being too old and decrepit to not be able to see myself in the bathroom. I'm also not sure why you'd think a light other than a downlight would leave a hole in the ceiling?

Christ I thought this kind of nonsense was saved for AIBU.

I've actually chosen something very similar to the Laura Ashley light posted by a PP. Our bathroom is a decent size, big enough for a bath, shower, sink, toilet, column radiator/heated towel rail and a large free standing cupboard/storage unit and our ceilings are nearly 3m.

I won't be commenting further as I just wanted some opinions on lighting styles and I've chosen something now.

Assuming you have a wife doesn't mean you are male. Wifework is the pointless stuff which most men don't do. I don't have a wife and always go for function above form, which is a challenge when most stuff is designed by arts students. Why make work?

gallileofigaro · 14/03/2021 14:12

I've not RTFT but please make sure you buy one that is suitable for a bathroom as they are designed for damp conditions.

LightOfMyLife21 · 14/03/2021 14:31

@gallileofigaro it helps if you read the whole thread, this isn't a long one, this has been discussed several times.

gallileofigaro · 14/03/2021 19:17

@LightOfMyLife21 I know it helps but it's not essential especially as you said you wouldn't be commenting again.

It's nice to be nice. #bekind.

Monty27 · 15/03/2021 05:09

Oh sweet lord
Can we keep gender crap out of design
In fact can we keep gender crap out of everything
I'm female and the best interior design inspirations have been from firstly myself and secondly a male pal 🙂

murbblurb · 15/03/2021 12:50

Actually I think 'gender crap' plagues design. Anything aimed at women is over priced , unreliable, impractical and generally shit.

You'll have to take my word for it that I am female but with the exception of underwear I am clad head to toe in bloke stuff. Means it has pockets, isn't transparent, last well, has no itchy trims and is in good strong colours. My specs come from the bloke side so no nasty sparkles or dirt grabbing twiddly bits and I would never buy a backpack aimed at women. Same principle for everything else I buy - kitchen was a nightmare because it is assumed only women cook and clean so design is form over function. Not in my house.

Your call.
