Window film - double glazing compatibility

I'm looking to buy some window film to stop the sun streaming in. I've got a full height window by my front door. It is double glazed with the outside glass being frosted. I've no idea what kind of double glazing though and apparently this is important if you are going to use window film as there is a risk of the window breaking due to thermal shock if in strong sunlight.

The film suppliers refer to certain BS numbers being compatible, but I've searched all over and can't find any. They are probably about 5/6 years old.

Any ideas?

I have considered blinds but really don't want them by the door.

@pigletjohn Do you know about windows?

I've never heard that thermal shock story. Where did you hear it?

you mean a reflective film?

I have it on my kids south facing windows. No idea about thermal shock, didn't read anything about it before we did it. Has helped with the heat.

Thank you.

I don't know if I specifically want a reflective film. I want to reduce light in the hallway so not sure if I want reflective or just tinted. The hallway can be uncomfortable to walk through and I find the dazzling light can trigger migraines.

That's interesting. Maybe they mean that some parts of the glass can get excessively hot.

I'd have thought you wanted a Solar Reduction film, but Window Film Company say phone them if you have questions, so try that.

A full height window by the front door, only a few years old, is most likely to be toughened (safety) glass. I have laminated, which is more burglar resistant, but that's unusual.

Having a new sealed unit (pane) fitted is much cheaper than you think, so if you have trouble with the film, ask around for your local Double Glazing, Window and Patio Door Repairman (there will be one) and they can probably either recommend and fit a film, or maybe a whole new glass unit. mine was recommended by the window cleaner. I paid £385 for a patio door panel made and fitted, that was six years ago, though.

@huseab Thanks for that. It's good to know it will help with the heat especially if we get another heatwave.

@PigletJohn Thanks very much for your input. I'll make some enquiries and take it from there.
