Bungalow conversion

Has anyone added a complete floor to a bungalow? We are looking to move into our local town (in a village at the mo). Lots of 50/60's type bungalows come up with good size plots (which we are after). I have seen that under permitted development you can add a story without planning subject to area. I just don't have a clue about cost! taking the roof off, adding an upstairs. Structural and building costs only not things like new kitchen etc. We are in the south west it that helps. I would love to hear some positive stories!

Several in our area have been converted although they had to have planning permission and the planning department and parish council were not keen, and I agree with them.

The 3 I know most about seemed to take a long time and in each each the family had a mobile home in the garden for the duration.

You’d also need to take into account the cost of making the foundations strong enough.

One was done on my route to work.
It took well over a year if not two.
It would probably have been faster to demolish and start again.

Yes there are loads on Instagram search #bungalowrenovation and you will see lots of people that have projects on there where they have done exactly what you are thinking of

I put a floor on a house. It looked like a bungalow from the street side but was actually already two floors. I had to reinforce the foundations (even though initially the structural engineer said they were good enough after digging holes). It cost about £200,000 and took nine months, which included adding a very large balcony the full width of the house, redecorating, adding three sets of French doors to the ground floor, and a replacing a small kitchen and utility room. This was 12 years ago and we did need planning permission at the time.

There’s one local to me that has done this and it looks very out of keeping to everything else and removed all privacy to the adjoining bungalows.
Don’t do it. You won’t be popular with the existing residents

Thanks for your replies. The area we are looking, most have all been renovated. Only one or two left looking old and tatty. Lots to think about
