serving hatch - inspire me please :)

We have quite as small kitchen with a large dining room next to it (1910 semi so square floor plan).
Lockdown has really made us appreciate the separate rooms, but I have been toying with the idea of a serving hatch. I know they are thought to be dated, but I thought if would be really useful when we eat. There isn't anything on either side of that wall, so won't lose any cupboard space.
If you have one can you any thoughts on what whether to have doors, and also how what dimensions are best? I couldn't find much on pinterest.
Thanks!

I have one and tbh I'm getting rid of it. The doors are broken and I can't find any to replace them with. Also my kitchen is tiny and I need the space so I can put a cupboard in. It's a shame as I like the idea of them but it just isn't practical for us.

RoSEbuds6 · 08/03/2021 18:22

That's interesting @BettaSplenden I hadn't thought of doors being difficult to source.
I'm thinking of moving our washing machine to the bathroom to make way for larder cupboard, as we never seem to have enough cupboard space for food. It's a very old kitchen, and lots of the carousels don't work at all, so not very useful! I hope a kitchen planner can help us.

I like ours. Its helpful to be able to pass things through rather than having to walk round all the time. You can talk between the two rooms as well.

It can make the dining room a bit draughty.

A serving hatch would be a bit dated, but you could open that wall right up so it was more of a peninsula? Even if you had to keep a pillar at one end to support the wall.

I would prefer a fixed opening, but then that doesn't keep the smells/noise out. Handy for people to chat to you when cooking.

I like your pictures @BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz but would prefer something like plain wooden shutters to shut the hatch when needed.
I work in the dining room at the moment, so would like some soundproofing when DH is vigorously unloading the dishwasher.
There's only me, DH and teen DD so I don't need to keep an eye on anyone, it would just be to make laying the table and serving up food a bit easier. [lazy bugger] I also predict that the cat will use it for lounging.

This is what I was going to say too. We will do this when we get the kitchen done.

oohh I need this thread!

RoSEbuds6 · 08/03/2021 18:48

I like this kind of thing but without the Shaker style of finish. Just something simple really.

A local craftsperson should be able to sort that out for you @RoSEbuds6. (I say craftsperson because I don't know whether it would be a joiner or a carpenter. I think the former, but what do I know?)

RoSEbuds6 · 08/03/2021 19:01

Yes @Knittedfairies it can't be that difficult surely!

I am not envisioning this to be a design feature just something to help with day to day life.

I guess I'm just not sure of the dimensions that work - I don't want it to be so small I feel like I'm working the door at a speakeasy, or so big that I'm a dinner lady...

I loved mine (moved now) was really handy but most of all for playing shop with the kids!

Handsnotwands · 08/03/2021 21:07

We love ours so much we enlarged it!

Blibbler · 08/03/2021 21:12

I love my serving hatch. I can keep an eye on the kids, watch TV from the kitchen and close the doors when everyone else in the house is getting on my nerves Smile
A joiner can do you new doors to any size easily.

FTEngineerM · 08/03/2021 21:20

There’s one in our house, well it used to be a window but house was extended to make a bigger kitchen and the window was left open as a giant hatch.

Like it because it’s light, brings light to a dark part of the house. I can watch my son play in the living room and potter about in the kitchen e.g dishes, laundry and such. Watch TV whilst still getting on with stuff.

Dislike it because it’s LOUD as hell went someone’s on the kitchen doing dishes/cooking/washing machine is on.

Bananajam · 08/03/2021 21:28

We have a open space between the kitchen and the new extension, we considered making it all open but in the end kept the wall but removed the window and extended the granite worktop through so it has a similar feel to a serving hatch. We have a galley kitchen so its nice to chat and catch up with people without them getting in the way! We have our washing machine in the downstairs loo so there's not a lot of noise in the open space and with the dining table in the extension its easy to pass plates etc through. I wouldn't change it. It feels more sociable when we can have friends over for dinner.
