How far are you prepared to travel?

I was in your position several years ago, as my husband got a job in Norwich and our children were primary and pre-school age at the time. You do get a lot more for your money but we struggled to find a village with enough facilities for a family, within commuting distance of Norwich. Many of the secondary schools are in Norwich and children bussed in from outside, so they have no local network of friends outside school time. I did not want that for our children, I wanted them to have friends locally. We ended up living in a suburb on the outskirts of the city but I never felt accepted there and struggled to make friends (none in 3 years of living there). I could go a whole week without talking to another adult other than my husband. I am not shy or don't usually have these issues. We also struggled to find a school that the children were welcomed into. We moved when my husband found another job

You may have to have a longer commute to find a larger village/small town that has decent networks for family life. We did originally think of wymondham/hellesden area, south of the city but were put off by people saying the traffic into Norwich in rush hour was bad, plus the secondary school, was difficult to get a place at then. Perhaps a more challenging commute should have been our compromise, but hindsight is a wonderful thing
I would do a lot of research before making a move, it may be different for you especially if you go out to work and meet other adults that way

Norwich and its surroundings are lovely. If good state schools are your priority take a look at Wymondham. Easy travel to Norwich from there. If you want a pretty village, try Stoke Holy Cross and the villages around it eg Shotesham. Or possibly round Surlingham.

If you want more buzz and like to be nearer to amenities, the NR2 area of Norwich (the Golden Triangle), or NR4 if you're looking for large detached houses, are generally considered the nicest. Schools are generally good.

Good luck.

Norwich is a fine city, lots going on.

Would your DH commute into work from one log the local train lines, or drive?

You could look at Aylsham.

No idea what things you like or dislike. Do you need good access to travel to rest of UK?

Stamford: beautiful, lovely countryside, Small Town and provincial, inward looking. The George.

Norwich: pretty, thriving, lovely countryside, cultural, bustling, mixed, open to all, City mentality but town sized. Lots of lovely pubs and restaurants.
