Where to start?

I need some help/guidance/signposting. My property desperately needs redecorating/renovation and there is so much to do I don't know where to start. I have never painted a room or stripped wallpaper in my life and I'm terrified of doing things in the wrong order. Can anyone suggest where I start?

Is it just decorating it needs, or more?

Freebird5 · 08/03/2021 11:52

I don't know really which is why I don't know where to start. Mainly decoration. I think? How do I know?

Make a list of everything you need to do & want to do then look at prioritising. Does something need to be fixed? Will doing x make your life better (I.e. decent wipeable paint in kitchen/bathroom etc)? Do you need to do x before you can do y?
What is your budget & timeframe?
Break it down into smaller chunks & make sure you research what to do, what you need etc.

Watch Renovate, Don't Relocate series by Sarah Beeny

Post some photos then advice can be given. Are electrics, roof, plumbing, insulation, plastering and windows all ok?

Pop onto your local Facebook page and ask for recommendations for local handy people or builders.

They will give you a no obligation free quote and the good ones will give you an itemised list.

Take that list and YouTube some stuff. B&Q have online tutorials for a lot of basic things.

Watch and decide what you think you can do yourself.

Have a look to see if you have a local library of things or similar where you can hire tools.

Tackle what you feel confident in, pay for
Someone to do the rest.

Electrics are good. No idea about plumbing. Plastering? How do I know if it's any good? I doubt it. No insulation as no cavity walls. What do you need pictures of?

Ask for recommendations of local builders and start from there.

You do not need to use them or pay for them to quote

Tap the plaster and see if it sounds hollow. If it’s not a new house often you take the wallpaper off along with half the plaster! You can try painting over the wallpaper if you think it might have blown and don’t want to address it yet!
