How can I sound proof patio doors and windows

Chocolate2020 · 05/03/2021 23:07

So my old 80s style patio doors back onto the main road and my god the noise is awful, if I owned the property they'd be out in a flash.

I haven't put up curtains yet but I don't think they would make the nosie any less loud..

Also my bedroom windows need replacing and they are on the main road, I get boy racers going past late at night...

Any tips please

Triple glazing. If you get curtains have them interlined.

We've got heavy weight double width curtains with thermal lining and they do a good job of blocking sound from next doors back garden as well as the draughts (reason we got them)

If they are replacement windows, there may be gaps between the frame and the brickwork, allowing noise (and draughts) in. It is usually concealed with a plastic trim glued on. This can be removed and the gap filled with expanding foam, trimmed and finished with white silicone sealant, as used round baths.

Expanding foam is very tricky to use, so if you decide to do that, come back.

You can probably pry off the plastic trim with a blunt knife, to have a look.

@PigletJohn I suspect this is something I need to do. I’ve inherited dodgy double glazing in a Victorian terrace, my bedroom sounds like the windows are open when they are not!

Yes that's exactly what mine sounds like, the entire room vibrates it's so loud because of the balcony 😬

My property is rented, would I be aloud to do that?. Do you think the landlord should sort it out

I don't suppose the landlord will care.

You could try.

I'd find out first if there are gaps.

Not sure if you can still get it but you used to be able buy stuff like huge sheets of cling film which you pasted across the windows and heated until it went taut to help soundproof and insulate. Also, thick lined curtains will help deaden the sound.

PigletJohn · 09/03/2021 15:55

the film is very good for heat insulation, as it creates a still pocket of air.

But sadly, sound blocking is proportional to the weight of the barrier, and the film is practically weightless, so ineffective.
