Kitchen layout - your thoughts please - image included

I'm contemplating putting my sink and hob along the same wall with units above them (example image attached).

Do any of you have this layout and does it create any practical issues at all or is it fine?

My immediate thoughts were that it may be high maintenance i.e.

  1. Will the water splash onto the underside of the cabinets and will I be forever having to wipe it dry?
  1. Will the water marks cover the backsplash and again will I have to be forever wiping down after every use?

I'm not wedded to this idea and am happy to go with the more traditional sink against window layout if this is going to give me a headache.

Underside of cabinets should be fine. They might collect some droplets of steam when you eg drain pasta but should be able to withstand that.

A mirrored splashback - yes you will need to wipe it a lot to avoid water marks, especially if you’re in a hard water area. A tiled splashback would make water marks less obvious. Or antiqued mirror (but that doesn’t really go with the modern sleek look here).

In this picture there’s hardly any space to the left of the hob, that would annoy me. Do you have room to have a reasonable space either side of both sink and hob if you have this layout?

Thanks @minipie I hadn't even considered the effects of steam.

Also, I am planning on having a 40cm clearance on the wall side of both the sink and hob.

What about banging your head when you're at the sink or hob?

Palavah · 03/03/2021 21:42

I don't think it's the layout that's the problem for the scenarios you described - it's more the colour and finish of the surface.

Toomanycats99 · 03/03/2021 21:45

I have my sink and cooker on same wall. There is 1100mm of cupboards between them. My only question is that a plug socket on the wall? I was told there were limits on how far a plug could be from sink / cooker so you may need to check you can fit them in if you need them there. From the looks of your units it looks like it might be a bit tight. I want to say it was 30cm so not sure if that's doable if you only have one unit. (Assuming it's standard width)

Don't think my sink ever really splashes water against the splash man j abs certainly not in the beer side of cupboards. Just measure clearance. I had shallowing cupboard as I felt the tall ones would intrude as my tap was quite tall.

minipie · 03/03/2021 21:46

Hmm 40cm isn’t a lot eg what about dishes drying, to the right of the sink is the usual place and don’t you want more than 40cm for that?

This is mine

Excuse fat fingers in original post - I always forget to check it back!

Good point @MrsMoastyToasty it hurt just thinking about it.

@Palavah this is just an image I found online to show the sink and hob combination layout. My colour palette is vastly different to this. I am not a fan of dark rooms particularly kitchens and bathrooms.

@Toomanycats99 am I right in thinking that you have 110cm of space between your top cabinets and the worktop? I was planning on 80cm as I'm a short little thing. Do you think that's insufficient?

Toomanycats99 · 03/03/2021 21:55

@pitapatarain I have 110cm worth of worktop between hob and sink. In the diagram you use as an example it only looks like 1 full unit (so 600mm) I would think that is a bit close. I'm not sure what the height clearance is actually. I wanted a fair bit as I have a kettle and microwave on worktops and didn't want steam from them pooling under cupboards.

pitapatarain · 03/03/2021 21:57

@minipie and @Toomanycats99 you both make excellent points about the practicality of the space, thank you!

It's not just steam, it's food and fat splashing upwards you want to worry about. I would definitely have an extractor above the hob rather than a cupboard. FWIW my hob is on an island with lights in the centre, they're quite high up too but they get absolutely filthy and need degreased often.

Soontobe60 · 03/03/2021 22:04

My sink is under wall cabinets but those directly above it are taller. I’m 5’ 2” and can reach the cupboards well enough, they also open upwards but the lower cupboards are regular side openers.
