Clearing MIL house, how do I sell her stuff?

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 02/03/2021 12:49

We've just sold my MIL's house (YAYYYYYY!) and have a few boxes of random stuff that may or may not be of value. Where would I start getting valuations on old jewelry, stamps and a few pieces of pottery?
This might not be specific to property/diy but I couldn't think where else to ask. Thank you!

Stanley Gibbons will say to compare on eBay - as a rule anything after 1970 is only worth a couple quid if it depicts something collected.
Tried flogging a collection left to DP in lieu of rent, got about £8 for stamps with cricketers on, then put the rest all together and got a fiver.

My dad's collection with unused Penny Blacks from each of the area codes would be a different matter.

This is the jug. It's quite small, about a hand span tall. I took it because I like it but if it is worth anything I'll sell it.

Most of the jewelry is 9ct and not in great shape. There are a few pieces of vintage costume jewelry that might actually be worth more!

Thanks @BasiliskStare, I'll have look at those links today when I am not homeschooling

I'll be binning the stamps! Definitely no penny blacks in there.

a bit random, but if you wanted to some jewellery making courses talk about reusing old broken jewellery.

I know I wanted to do something like that pre lockdown and was wondering how much it would cost by the time you had paid for the course and "materials" and then read about reusing stuff.

I do have a few broken bits that I keep meaning to sell... but never get round to it so am saving them for my debut as a goldsmith now Hmm :o

Otherwise I'd put a few pics up on local FB groups and dump anything left. ...if you cba with the usual aggro on these groups.

Don’t bin them! Someone will want them! Put them on eBay!
HeathIns · 03/03/2021 09:49

The jug is a ‘Gluggle jug’ OP.
Vintage ones here (and all over the internet)

www.bettyandmaudevintagehome.co.uk/product/large-ceramic-gluggle-jug

They sell new ones in Oliver Bonas atm.
I like the pink one!

Ellmau · 03/03/2021 10:59

Don't bin the stamps - you can still use them!

Desmondo2016 · 03/03/2021 11:13

Well my mother in law's stamp collection paid for a large part of our wedding, her furniture was collected by a local auction house and raised a couple more thousand and her jewellery had been shared out between us, some bits are valuable but mostly they've given my 4 year old an amazing costume jewellery/dress up box.

Boxes of Noritake china which we initially thought may have some value ended up going to a lovely recycling shop (they collected) and some other ornaments that no-one in the family wanted to keep got sold for bits and bobs, maybe a few more hundred.

Are the stamps in pence (as in current money, so post decimalisation)? If so just use them in general postage.

@FoofOfTheWalkingDead - how lovely , my son has one of those which DPILs had as a present from some friends in America - they called it a gurgling Cod. Ds's is navy blue - not worth a bean I think but he likes it.

LongTimeMammaBear · 04/03/2021 20:36

Most definitely auction house. But you need to look around. There is one near us that does auction for certain types of collectibles (stamps as an example)

Some auction house may not be interested in things like that so do look around.

hootyowls · 04/03/2021 21:04

Please do not bin the stamps.

The RNIB can make use of them. If you go to their web page you can request a pre-paid envelope, so it will not even cost you anything to send them off.

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 04/03/2021 21:17

Go to a local auction house , I dropped loads of stuff off and they valued and emailed me the listings and recommendations.. I agreed to most of it with reserves and they then sent me cheques .. so easy !

Magstermay · 04/03/2021 22:56

If there are things you don’t want to sell you could try charity shops (some collect) or freecycle / local free FB pages. People often post bags of stuff for car boot sales on there (appreciate no sales at the moment) rather than going to landfill.

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/03/2021 23:08

Is the stamp collection clean? If so I’d be interested if they’re global. Pls DM me

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 05/03/2021 09:25

Thanks for all the replies. You've given me lots of ideas for what to do with it.
@GrumpyHoonMain, I will have a look and let you know!
I haven't had time to do anything with the MIL Hoard this week because of work and homeschooling so I've got an exciting weekend aheadGrin
