I've doing some viewings now
I have no idea what I'm doing
What should I be looking for?
Should I be asking anything?

viewing is not something you tick.
first of all, are you ready to move out, it will reduce uncertainty and stress.
knowing exactly your budget including stamp duty, removal, legal fees.
search any location you wish to consider by checking distance to the stations or good school and safety..etc.
watch property website like hawk, save any property you like and watch how long they have been there, any reductions, previous sold price, that will give you a pattern about the purchase price and why some properties get sold quick and others not.
use all the tool available, google streetview for any visible historic alteration.
planning(local authority) website for any improvements, once you view the property try to spot any changes(loft,extension,wall bearing removed,annexes..etc) and compare with the planning applications, helps you to spot any dodgy works.
viewing streets and the surrounding before viewing any potential properties, this will save you lots of time.
make a list of any potential property and compare them(size, transport, type of build, toilet downstair,parking,garage,how far from busy road, compromises).
you will start to build a picture of an ideal property, soon you will learn to spot great gems.

Could the layout work for you
Imagine the place with no furniture ( you may use a bedroom as an office for example ) and your decor choices

What state is it in? Do the windows /flooring /woodwork/kitchen etc look in good nick -things that could be expensive .

Have they been papering over cracks
It doesn't need to be pristine , just well maintained

Signs of damp inside or out .. look at the ceilings. Changes of shade on paint

Can you see damage anywhere , especially brickwork or roof

Acoustics..can you hear your partner when walking in a different room . What do the stairs sound like

Where is it ? Have you been down the street at different times of day/night ? Rush hour and 10pm are good choices. Walk not drive, how does it tell ? Safe? Noisy? Busy ?

Take a tape measure if room sizes look tight , sometimes things just work anyway

Then you can work out what it's worth to you

Make a list of your musts, wants, must not haves, use that for logic

It will also help you get the areas with properties matching your spec at that budget

Look over a broad area (online) & once you have identified some suitable properties do a big drive round 1 day - you may end up crossing some areas off the list/thinking of new ones

WHY do you need to be out in 6 months, & what will you do if you don't find a property you like/love in that time (rent?)

Once you find a house/street you like, try to go there late at night (eg after 10-11) to see if there is any unsavoury element (this is the Londoner in me talking, may not apply where you live)

First of all decide whether you'll sacrifice location for house. Then areas need checking for values as you decide what you need and/or want.
If you mean looking around a property - ignore the 'dressing' and concentrate on the size and layout plus the condition.
What exactly are you confused about?

You will get a 'feel' in a house. Presumably you will only view houses in the right area and fulfil your basic bedroom requirements, and be in your price range. But keep an open mind too, about style etc. Then go and just walk through. Is the layout compatible with how you live? Does it feel right? There is a 'vibe' to houses.
Paint, flooring, room division, bathrooms etc can all be changed. The size amd direction of garden can't. Decide what you can compromise on (busy road, downstairs loo, distance to station/shops/friends etc).
Decide how much work you are prepared to do.
Then go with your gut. Get a happy feeling? Can imagine waking up there? Then go for it.
