Young couple moving from London to Bedford?

My partner and I are both 30 and live in North London (Crouch End). We've rented here for 6 years and love it but are looking to buy with the view of starting a family in the next couple of years. We can't afford even a barely liveable 1/2 bed flat anywhere within the M25 so looking to go further afield.

My partner works in Old Street and will likely be commuting in every day, even post-pandemic. I work near Regent Street and will likely only be needing to commute max 3 days per week post-pandemic, maybe less.

We visited Bedford to view some houses recently, as it's really the only place we can afford a decent size (3 bed) house within our budget. I have family in the North, so easy access to the M1 and A1 is a plus for me! Having looked at the classic commuter towns north of London, we can't afford much better properties than inner London and then there's the train tickets on top, so Bedford is coming out as the best option.

I know it has a bit of a reputation but is it really that bad? The Castle Quarter seems nice and with a car, and spending much of the week in London - would it matter so much? Also wondered what the commute is like e.g. is the line known for delays and are you likely to get a seat?!

Any advice appreciated! Thank you

Also meant to say check the cost of commuting, my DH payed over £5000 a year for his season ticket and the car park was about £800.
Also check the train times I seem to recall there was a big timetable change a few years ago which meant less fast trains stopped at Bedford (my DH got the line that went through Sandy not the Bedford line).

Have you looked into Northampton? It's around an hour to get into Euston. Get more for your money. Guess it depends how long you would like your commute to be

Or possibly Milton Keynes- depends on your budget!

Hi Helena

Hope you well . I just wanna ask you how are you enjoying living in Bedford ? I and my husband are looking into moving there from west London for the same reason as you but we still not sure about the area and where to look ? How do
You find the commute ? My husband is nurse so he will look for job in Bedford but I work as nanny so need to travel every day to central of London. …. Would love if you can share some of your experiences ! Thank you x

I’m not the OP, but I really really wouldn’t move to Bedford @KlaraRenaud!! It’s really rough, the town centre is like a ghost town after most of the shops closed down. Milton Keynes is a million times better and if I could afford it that’s where I’d live.
I grew up in Bedford, ended up back when married, but left again 8 years ago. Best decision ever as it’s gone really downhill in the past 5 years. We’re in Northamptonshire now.

Thank you so much ! I have done some research and been told to avoid Bedford . We are now considering Hitchin and Aylesbury …. MK is also on list … we wanna rent for a year to figure out where exactly we wanna settle , for this reason I’m worried to buy now even we have the finance in case we not happy there … do you think These areas are nice ??

AssemblySquare · 08/02/2022 20:22

I don’t know Aylesbury at all, but Hitchin is lovely. I like Milton Keynes a lot but there is big variation in how nice the areas are.
