Cost of a small garden wall

We’re looking at having a small garden wall built around two sides of a patio. One side 3metres and one side 4m. Around waist height. Any idea of costs? Thanks.

Bricks, or block and render?

NoTeaForMe · 01/03/2021 11:45

Bricks. Double skin for strength

We were given an average cost of £250/m2 for a single skin brick wall (with pillars along it for strength). That is in London however so may be a lot cheaper elsewhere!

£250 per m is way too cheap. Walls of this height will require foundations and you would need the correct width to stand up to high winds. It needs designing for your conditions to be stable. Don’t skimp. My DH says walls are more like £1000 m if designed properly with decent bricks and copings. £250 is more like a day rate for building.

A waist height double skin garden wall for 1000 a meter !!!!!!! I think someone is telling your husband porky pies 😳. So that’s 7 grand for a 7 meter long wall waist high ? No.

Bluntness100 · 01/03/2021 14:47

A thousand a metre? Lol. That’s not a six grand job, no way.

I’ve had walls this size built but part of a bigger garden project. You will need a foundation built, that’s correct, as they can’t just build it on grass or earth

So basically it’s dig the foundations, remove the earth, fill with concrete, then build on that. Say it’s three feet high then you’re looking at say six sq metres.

I’d say you’re maybe looking say four days work, two men, usually you get the labourer and brick layer, so I’d say you’re likely looking at about two and a half to three grand for the job inc materials.

You need to get some quotes in.

Yes our £250 didn’t include foundations, correct, that was extra

Single skin is probably not sensible. DH is FIStructE. I think he knows the time of day to get a good safe job done. Bricks, foundations, labour for £250 per m for 1.24m tall isn’t realistic. £1000 per m is. Depends on your attitude to safety, building quality, foundations and joints etc.

Op I think the 250 plus foundations is in the right ball park. Maybe a little bit more.

For a wall that size ( let’s say a meter high ) you’ll need about 900 bricks, they can cost anywhere between 50 pence each and £2.00 each plus whatever your using on top ( blue brick, coping stones ). I recently bought 550 bricks and 80 thermolite block , a bulk bag of red sand and a bag of yellow sand and it came to £650.

Foundations will be an unknown and will depend on ground conditions, but 7m x 400 x 300 deep should be fine for a meter wall, which works out about a cubic meter of concrete £120 ish per m2.

Sand and cement, skip etc about another £350-400.

And labour I’d guess at 2 people about 4 days maybe 5 if they stretch it out 😀. That’s just a rough idea . 👍

Thanks all. Very helpful. Though I’m shocked at the £1000 idea!
