Brick path across the lawn: dare I DIY?

I have a stack of old but clean, undamaged bricks.

I want to run a brick path from the back patio (municipal paving slabs) to a hard-standing/additional patio area, across lawn. Total straight line is 4-5m, but it will curve for aesthetic reasons and because, that way, with careful positioning, I won't have to try cutting bricks in half! It'll be probably 5 bricks wide.

I'm an old codger, 57, but not scared of a bit of work; I plan on putting the dug out soil to one side of the path as that will become a garden bed.

I guess I should be preparing that grass (to die off!) now?

I can do this, can't I? 😳😊 I've given up on quotes as they either don't come, or they come then never quote, or want £1000 for it.

I plan on cutting a trench twice as deep as my bricks, 5 brick widths wide, across the lawn, edging it with lawn edging, then lining it with weed mat, then tamped damp sand, then my bricks, then brushing dry mix into the gaps.

What do you think?

Come over to the gardening forum and look at this thread.

All sounds ok but just bear in mind that brick paths can be quite slippery in the wet, according to the aspect [out of full sun a lot of the time]
and especially after a lot of rain in the winter months.

Just be aware if you have to walk on them in those conditions and clean them off in the spring. I'm saying it because I knew someone who slipped on wet bricks and fell very heavily and was very bruised, lucky it wasn't worse.

I've done a small straight section of brick path and it was hard work but totally doable. The amount of earth excavated will be immense and you will need an unbelievable amount of sand.

I didn't bother with the lawn edging in the end and seem to have got away with it
