Mould on kitchen ceiling

Can anyone advise on what to do about mould on my kitchen ceiling? We had a slow leak in the bathroom above which it took a while to get to the root of. That's now fixed but the kitchen ceiling is stained and I've just realised that it's mouldy. Hadn't even occurred to me but potentially it's a health risk. Do I attempt to clean or leave it be and get someone round to repair the ceiling as soon as it's safe to do so?

Personally if my ceiling looked like that I'd get someone round now.

You can get mould resistant paint, but that looks like the mould needs removing properly.

What posh said.

Thanks, I know it looks awful and now I've realised it's mouldy I'm quite appalled. Husband doesn't seem worried but think I will find someone to come and do something about it sharpish. Worried it could be detrimental to our health quite frankly.

Soak tissues/kitchen roll in bleach. Lay over stain and tape a plastic bag over them to hold them up and stop bleach dripping on you/your floor. Leave overnight. Will kill the mould so it doesn’t grow. Don’t scrub at it (releases spores) and wear a mask while you’re doing it. In the morning remove and wipe gently (still no scrubbing). Leave to dry. If there’s no more water leaking and the stain doesn’t get any worse after this and dries out, it’s dead and you can paint it.

Thanks @MaryLennoxsScowl will give that a go 👍🏻

I think you really need to scrape that whole area away, plaster will probably come away with it a bit, and then leave it plenty of time to fully dry out before you fill and paint. Wear a mask when scraping it back.

If you are getting in there yourself, wear eye protection (ie goggles, probaby £1 at a DIY store) as well as a mask

If you can afford to, I might just get someone in to cut out section and replace, which would be a few hundred pounds

Most definitely wear eye protection if using bleach above your head, i did the same in a rental when young, don't think Id take that risk now

Update, I've made an enquiry today with a professional mould removal company. Possibly overkill but I'm a bit nervous about attempting to clean it myself.
