Relocating for school?

We have just accepted an offer for an excellent school for my child which is 50 minutes drive away, or more than one hour in bad traffic. DD is quite young to be travelling by herself. Given that the school run is going to be super stressful we are considering relocating and renting out our lovely house and renting close to school. We don’t want to sell because we would like to return to the house and our area in six years when she finishes the school.
According to my calculations after paying tax etc we will be able afford a fairly decent apartment close to school. It sounds ok on the surface but I can’t bear the thought of someone ruining my nice house and having to pay for redecoration. Has anyone done this before: renting out your place to move for the school?

@skeggycaggy thank you, that’s good advice. @minniemoocher no school buses, unfortunately, but sharing a ride is definitely a good option

@deathbollywood

"it's called school admissions fraud your rental would not be considered your permanent address and they would use your owned property address"

This is just utter shite. She has already been offered a place. It would be fraud if she was offered a place based on somewhere she claimed to be living but wasn't

Loads of people move area to get in catchment and get a school place

RedAndGreenPlaid · 26/02/2021 17:54

I know a number of people that have done this, and it's not fraud if it's independent or she's already got the place in the school.

People often don't realise the practicalities of school commute until they've started doing it daily, and it can be difficult to move permanently for all sorts of reasons.
Seven years is a long time to rent though.

It’s an independent school so no, it’s not fraud at all.

@SeasonFinale thank you, that’s very helpful. I really hope that we won’t lose.

Ours also travelled a long way to school about 1 hour, but they did have a dedicated school bus £1500 each!
We did drive them a few times for after school stuff etc.
As soon as DD was old enough she drove her and her brother
Looking back now the quality of education they got for our inconvenience of travelling it was well worth the effort and we would have no hesitation in doing it again, they both came out well prepared for the world and now have even managed to get decent jobs.
We found many children travelled so after school stuff will involve some driving for you but we never found it an issue as when you look at the end result.

@Funf thank you for sharing your experience! If only we had a school bus too!

I hope I will find someone! So far the traffic shows 1 hour in peak time, let’s see what happens after the lockdown.

@LittleOverwhelmed thank you for your comment. Unfortunately no boarding at all.. I think they have children coming from many places using trains and buses.
