Is this salvageable or have I royally stuffed up?!

So I purchased this unit off FB market place so not much chance of a return - but unfortunately they listed the height and width the wrong way round (definitely their mistake - they said the short measure was the height and the long measure the width) . I was stupidly excited to find a fitted wardrobe that fit my room so perfectly .... but it’s the inverse !

I’ve now got all the bits of it taking up the office , spare bedroom and landing and it’s about five inches too tall to put up. The top cupboards are attached to the lower ones so it would be a job for a saw !!! And probably a helping hand since I’m pregnant and probably shouldn’t be sawing furniture up- although I can be very easily swayed on this!

Should /Could I:

1. Slice 5inches off the bottom- I’d lose the decorative trim, but I’m pretty short so I doubt the lowered hanging space will be impacted
2. cut the cupboard doors off the top and hope I can somehow use them else where - but have the thing be much too short for the room
3. cut my loses and try sell it on ?

What I'd probably do is take the cupboards off the top. Hard to say without seeing the pieces but if you took off the doors and then removed 5" from everything vertical put the top back on and then buy wicker baskets to fit the gaps it could still look neat and be the right height.

Hmmm not sure what you can do about it but that's right isn't it. The longer measurement is the width and the shorter measurement the height? It's wider than it is tall.....

Could you cut the cupboard doors off at the bottom? Fit them back on, Then you still have cupboards on top?
Disclaimer, I am diabetic and my blood glucose is a bit low, i am scoffing fruit pastilles & I may be talking utter bullshit.......

definitely don't slice off the bottom, it would make it wobbly & fall apart.

I'd either slice off the top or just cut your losses & sell it on.

Looking at the pictures - that’s what you’d assume regarding height and width- which is why I believed them. But sadly, it’s very definitely the other way round now I have them in the room and have a tape measure against them!!

I'd sell it on if I were you. Its a lovely piece. It won't look right at all if it's cut

Sell it on or ask for a refund as it was the seller's error. The time and cost involved in making it fit just won't be worth it. It looks like the top cupboards are integral so it will look a mess if you cut it up. It's really not a nice enough piece of furniture to spend more money on.

That must be some weird kind of optical illusion then! There are 8 square cubby holes going along the width, and I cant see how more than 5 cubby holes could be in the height ?????

Yes, true. Looking again there is no way that unit is taller than it is wide, it makes no sense at all, the proportions would be all wrong.

How tall are your ceilings OP?

I think it’s a weird picture... when I got it in the room the proportions definitely weren’t what I expected !!!

... and unless my tape measure is off... the measurements they gave werent even accurate anyway!

But there’s nothing really to do now except for sell it on and hope someone else has better luck than I do!

I would ask for a refund firstly, as if the measurements are totally wrong then its just not as described and unfit for your purpose. If they wont give it, I would sell it on tbh. I can't see how you could adjust it without it looking obvious then it can end up looking like a botch up which will probably annoy you no end. Maybe a carpenter could make it smaller more professionally but its adding to the cost again. Sorry OP.

Are we looking at the whole thing? So confusing.
If they gave you the wrong measurements than surely you can demand a refund?

I agree with the others, ask for a refund or sell it on.

If you painted them after chopping them about I think it would look okay, if you decided to go down that route.

What are the measurements? Did they give them in inches or cm ? It definitely looks wider than it is tall .
