Look daft to replace a few cracked kitchen floor tiles with patterned as "feature tiles"?

We want to move house within the next few years and unsure what to do with our kitchen floor as we don't want to spend a fortune on it if we're moving (although we want it to look "done" so future buyers won't be put off having to replace the floor straight away).

It is tiled and there are 3 or 4 cracked tiles in front of the fridge. We don't have any spare tiles left from previous owners and an internet search yields nothing similar (43cm square tiles seem quite hard to find).

Initially we thought about putting wood effect Lino in. But the previous owner has put some of the floor tiles up the walls as skirting boards so these would then look (more) silly. Removing those will lead to having the walls re plastered.

So OH suggested we put in a different kind of tile, possibly patterned, in place of the broken ones to create a feature "runner" type effect. At first I laughed it off as daft but now I'm thinking...

What do you reckon, we will be making it worse in an attempt to fix it or could it look ok?

Here are some pictures. Just a note, if we put in patterned tiles we would get rid of the brick wallpaper as it would be too jazzy!

It's just these ones we were thinking.

This is from the listing when we bought it if that helps to see it from other angle.

In all honesty I'd leave them as they are. I personally think it would look out of place, and probably it would bug me every time I looked at them. Plus a faff to take them up, scrape the floor clean underneath, and match the grout, which may crack at the joins with the original grout.

When people buy homes, they know they've been lived in before and might not be perfect and need things replacing. I certainly don't think it would be an issue having a few cracked tiles, unless the your house is like a show home. Buyers may well want to remove the whole kitchen and flooring and put their own stamp on it anyway.

I can't see the cracks in that picture so assume they're not noticeable unless you're really looking for them. I'd just leave it as is.

I’d fill the cracks with epoxy resin to seal and do a colour match paint touch up. They look as though they’re supposed to appear “rustic” anyway, most people would have to look quite hard to see them?

This is a picture of the cracks

I think it will look awful. Why don't you put vinyl over the top.

Anatomical · 22/02/2021 18:26

We had a similar situation and struggled to find square tiles to match. We ended up buying a larger rectangular tile the same colour and cutting it down.

Just leave it alone.

If you, for yourselves, want to have feature tiles because you'd enjoy it and think it would be fun, then sure, go ahead. (I have several unusual decorative elements in my home, I'm all for them!) But it sounds like you're doing this for potential future buyers who probably won't notice the cracks anyway (they certainly aren't evident in your photo) and may not be bothered by them, but who definitely would notice random different tiles.

Lochroy · 22/02/2021 19:34

I would leave it, unless you want it doing for yourselves? There's quite a bit about the kitchen I would choose to change as a buyer (sorry, not trying to be rude, but each to their own!) so not worth you doing anything IMHO.

Maybe something like this?

I'd rather buy somewhere with broken tiles than a few random feature tiles

Soontobe60 · 22/02/2021 19:50

Just get an actual carpet runner? If you use a piece of that stuff you put under the rug to stop it slipping it will be fine.

Hallyup5 · 22/02/2021 20:28

I really wouldn't bother. We had similar cracks on our kitchen floor due to a leak. When we sold, nobody even mentioned it.

user1471538283 · 22/02/2021 21:50

Maybe try to fill the cracks with something, a sealant? If all else fails put a little rug down. I wouldn't change the tiles

Heronwatcher · 22/02/2021 22:04

Could you use wood effect vinyl flooring and then paint the tiles up the skirting board with tile paint (if you painted them white you probably wouldn’t realise they were tiles- they would look like wood).
