How do so find the right architect ?

OK so I fully admit that I am probably deluded by all the property programmes and magazine articles about these wonderful creatures who can draw up the most amazing plans....

We interviewed three architects when we first moved in, found two very disappointing but liked the third. Engaged her and did a full site survey - she then came up with the oddest drawing we had seen and which completely missed the brief. Life intervened and we decided not to move ahead. We are now looking at a build in the next 2-3 years and will need an architect (we will need planning).

How best to engage one ? We have sought local recommendations but everyone has come back with recommendations based on the very standard kitchen/dinner first floor extension of a Victorian house (which is very common here but not what we have or need).

We have also done some thinking and sketched out what we need. We still need an architect (and especially want some views on how to make it all flow), but how best to find one without personal recommendations? I should say we also approached an architect who had worked on a local modern house. It was one of the worst meetings we have had - he literally sucked the energy from the air and whilst at the same time telling us all about how well he was doing financially !

Look at their work via their web sites! I think you engage an architect to design flow for you! If you are very prescriptive, maybe use a technician? Do you want an innovative design and newer materials? What about orientation? Use of light etc? I’m all for using an architect who is trained but I would look at their work first. If you are clear about what you want, do you need one though?

Do you have a local Facebook page....ask for recommendations on there.

We just had several that came around and gave us their ideas...two were the same boring stick a room on the back scenario. The third was more imaginative, take down walls and insuring steels, incorporating an existing extension and the result is fabulous. I think you will know when you listen to them describe ideas.

There’s a directory on the RIBA website: www.architecture.com/find-an-architect/practices/search#

The directory will help create a shortlist of qualified professionals (RIBA-chartered, ARB-registered). Then, as PP said, browse the website of each practice to see if you like their projects as each will have different approaches and styles.
