Quick Kitchen Island Question

We are renovating at the moment and the electrician is coming tomorrow to plan lighting in the kitchen extension. We are getting our kitchen from Handmade Kitchens of Christchurch (much recommended on here) but there lead time is loooooooooong - June. You don't actually talk to the planner until 10 weeks before, so I am not sure exactly how big our kitchen island will be.

I am trying to calculate where to put the pendant lights over the island and I know that the units on the back wall will be roughly 65 deep, and then I want a clearance of at least 1 metre before the island starts but I don't know how deep to allow whcih I need to do in order to centre light fittings? If I wanted drawers on both sides and a 'lip' for seating - what sort of width would that be?

If anyone has followed this gobbledegook and can give me a vague answer, I'd be very grateful!

It isn't the fitter at all its the (very well known and reputable) freelance kitchen designer. She's had various clients reporting issues.

Im still torn though and trying to decide what to do.

On islands and light placement though it depends on how much space you have in total. You should allow 120cm for a standard gap between units and 150cm for an upscale look. If you had two full sized units and then a breakfast bar overhang you'd need the island to be minimum 150 deep (60 + 60 + 30). You might want a deeper overhang though. Remember then you'll want a worktop overhang of 2-3cm and also remember that if you put drawer units under a breakfast bar you wouldn't be able to get into the top drawer so you need cupboards.

Thanks @HasaDigaEebowai - that's really useful sizing guide and good note about top drawer being inaccessible. I"m going to look at my plans again and see where I am at.

Out of interest, what kind of issues has your designer come across with HKOC?

@HasaDigaEebowai - I would be a bit suspicious of someone recommending DIY kitchens over a company like HKOC - were there other recommendations as there are many kitchen companies such as www.solidwoodkitchencabinets.co.uk and www.pineland.co.Uk that they could have recommended which would have been more in line with what you had chosen originally.
Commission maybe?
