Orientation of apartment

Hello, this is my first post here. I would like to know how important is the direction the flat is facing? I have 2 options where both flats face the same direction for kitchen, living area and bedroom. There is one facing totally SW and another totally NE. Which would you choose? There is no balcony, I occasionally take food photography and video too but it shouldn’t be an issue. How shady does north-facing flat gets over the day?

In my flat the lounge and kitchen face West and I like to watch the sunset. In the morning the eat in kitchen is little dark though. The bedrooms and bathrooms face due East. Sunny in the mornings which is OK.

Assuming that you are in the northern hemisphere I'd choose one that faces SW so you have more natural light.

ToastAndBlueberies · 21/02/2021 07:56

North is the darkest

muddledmidget · 21/02/2021 08:05

North would also be the coolest. Friends live in a modern flat with loads of supposedly modern glass, and it's stifling in the summer

Bimblybomeyelash · 21/02/2021 08:41

The front of my house faces south west. It is very sunny. Especially in winter months when the sun is low is the sky. And in the summer it gets very hot at the front. I often have to have the blinds down in the day. I think I’d rather have a cooler and darker NE facing flat.

@RhymesWithOrange Yea it’s around East Midlands. Might appreciate the extra sunlight compared to Glasgow where I’m currently in.

@muddledmidget that’s new to hear! Does loads of glass enough to heat up a north-facing flat too in summer? The flat has quite a lot of windows (I really like that) but I haven’t seen the flat in person yet.

NE will be gloomy after early morning and you can't change that. SW will get hot in summer but is manageable with good blinds. The UK is gloomier more often than it is sunny so I'd go SW.

@Bimblybomeyelash may I ask which area is your house in? Yea people would prefer a south-facing garden instead of the whole flat facing south. Bright sunlight makes me drowsy and unproductive sometimes

@Mosaic123 sounds like the perfect flat! Really happy for you :)

@ToastAndBlueberies yep that’s for sure, especially when it’s surrounded by slightly taller buildings

I would generally say what everyone else has said here but my daughter is an artist and artist's prefer north facing light. Artists studios usually have that orientation particularly if purpose built to be studios. It doesn't leach out colours. So if you are serious about it I'd check out what's recommended for photography/film.

Pearl6821 · 21/02/2021 21:46

@SwedishEdith I am likely to go with that yeah! Plus its cheaper haha
