I've just melted my curtains. Help me find something else!

I've used home kit to dry clean the living room curtains. They hang over old patio doors and in the summer, the kids are in and out and the curtains get filthy.

The lining melted into the curtain and fused together. I've pulled it apart slowly but it has pulled a layer of the curtain with it. It's near the bottom but too far up to get away with shortening them for the patio doors. I'm telling myself I can shorten them and use in my bedroom (which desperately needs new curtains).

Anyway. Do I need new curtains? Or shall I look at a Roman blind? Has anyone got a blind over a patio door? I've taken the curtains down and the amount of extra light in the living room is making me rethink. Plus blinds won't get filthy in the summer.

But. It's a cold window (ancient) and I'm unsure.

Could you just get a cheap washable pair of curtains and maybe just have them up in the winter, if the window looks ok without, take them down over summer

I'm struggling to find any that are washable. I'm thinking a longer pole will allow them to be pushed back further that will help. And definitely cheap! I have a habit of changing my mind so least if their cheap I won't feel so bad. I've found a very reasonable place online which also alter them because I can't sew!

A longer pole sounds a good idea then they will be out the way, it sometimes hard to get the right length with doors as curtains are often too long which is quite fashionable but no good with kids running about. I've sometimes washed dry clean curtains on a cold wash and line dried and they have turned out ok

Dunelm is also quite good for cheaper curtains and I think does alterations quite reasonably

Have you had a look on eBay or Facebook marketplace to see if anyone is selling any cheaply?

We have curtains for the patio door in the dining room, but also have metal holdbacks that keep the curtains out if the way - which not only reduces the children touching them but also lets more light in to the room!

Thank you! I'm so angry with myself. I wish I had washed them now instead of spending £20+ on the dry cleaning kit and now having to buy new curtains.

I've looked on Facebook and nothing the right size.
The doors are ancient and very drafty. I think it might become a priority to replace them. A quick search and it looks like they aren't as expensive as I thought. Least then with less embarrassing doors, I can keep the curtains pulled right back. And more secure.

Spending money I haven't got Hmm Wink

IKEA is also great for big long curtains. We have some of the thick blackout ones.

Have a look at wave curtains, they have a much narrower stack when open and therefore also need less fabric. Curtains to go do a range. We have the ££ silent gliss version for our loft room Juliet balcony set up and really like them

Thanks. I've found some washable ones in Asda. It's all muted tones of cream, taupe and grey in my living room and I think I'm going to attempt to add some colour! Maybe sage green? I've got pencil pleat at the moment (which I think I prefer) but they take up more room so going for eyelet.

I can't make my mind up about the colour tbh. But thinking if I order then I can send them back. At £30 and washable I think it sounds a little too good to be true! What do you think?
Be honest do you think they look cheap?
Don't know who I'm kidding Grin.
The ones I've ruined were over £100 so I definitely need to shorted them and reuse them in my room httpsssss://direct.asda.com/george/home/curtains-blinds/light-green-plain-dye-cotton-eyelet-curtains/GEM719002,default,pd.html?cgid=D26M01G01C04?shareProduct=true

Is it possible to shorten past the damaged bit and then put a new piece of curtain material at the bottom? Failing that, swop the curtains round so that damaged bit won't be obvious?

I would order the Asda ones, if they don't look right it's easy to return to Asda, you can never really tell from the photos that well but the colour looks like it would go with your neutral colours
