Rendering a brick built house

We are buying a house, 1970s, which is brick built. It is not in a conservation area or anything like that. We are wondering about thermal render. Anyone done this?
Do you need planning permission to have it rendered?

No permission needed for render as far as I know (mid way through rendering a brick house!)

How big is the house, much is it costing to render, if you don’t mind sharing.

It depends. Some areas have covenants.

Think very carefully about render. It can take a lot of time and money to maintain, with constant issues to sort.

We have it, and can’t not have it now it’s been out on. It was hacked off once to replace it, after it had cracked, blown, and become full of damp, and as it was hacked off, a good part of the front face of the bricks underneath came off with it. We’re constantly filling cracks and repainting. Really wish we just had plain brick.

Thanks Will that come up in the local searches? Or do you contact the local planning office?

Not sure. I was interested in buying a house that had been extensively renovated and I looked it up on the planning portal and found the owner had it rendered without permission so had to apply retrospectively.

The house I ended up buying isn’t rendered but I’ve got a copy of the op fir the extension and it specifies it must be brickwork matching the existing or white/cream render in keeping with other houses in the area.

Having just read a report posted on another thread about damp being caused by covering breathable bricks in unbreathable render I wouldn't do it.

I believe rendering a brick house does require planning permission.

I'm always suspect about a house that is rendered, when the rest of the neighbourhood are still plain brick. Mostly because people render them to hide faults like dodgy brick work or Subsidence repair work.
