Would you live half a mile from a motorway?

We've seen a house that we love the look of. It's detached, four bedrooms, a lovely old character property in a nice little village.

The only thing is that it's 0.4 miles as the crow flies from the motorway. Would we be able to hear the noise from the garden do you think? Would there be higher pollution etc?

It's 60 miles from us (we're looking to relocate). Can't decide whether to traipse down and have a look at it or whether the motorway proximity is a deal-breaker.

Op if you go on the local council’s website they should have air quality information. Areas with particularly poor air quality should be designated as Air Quality Management Areas so you’ll be able to see if your house is close to one and what the council are doing about it. I suspect as we move away from diesel the particulates that cause breathing difficulties will decrease - not that I’m an expert on this.

I live a couple of miles from a motorway and have friends who live half a mile away and they say the humming is fairly constant so they don’t notice it.

I would join a local Facebook group and maybe go on the parish council’s website to see what’s mentioned about local developments that wouldn’t appear in a solicitors search. The reason I say this is that I am a few miles from one motorway junction that only allows traffic on so the main A road parallel to the motorway is congested with traffic from the surrounding junctions. There is a strong campaign from people in the biggest local town (about 8 miles away) to get this junction to have an ‘off’. This would cause significant extra traffic and reduce quality of living of people who live in a lovely village near that junction but increase it for everyone else. I wouldn’t move to that area while the future of the junction is in question.

I do. Motorway is the other side of woodland. I hear a very distant hum if I'm listening for it but otherwise never notice it.

If you are detached and do not have horrid and noisy neighbours I would buy it! I dont mind traffic noise. One of our houses was close to the city and we would hear the roar of racing cars once a year outside which I quite liked. Traffic noise is predictable unlike people ...
