How long would you wait for a kitchen quote?

Hi, just wanted to know aibu about getting a kitchen quote.
Had someone come round on Monday morning to measure up for the kitchen. They said they would send an email with a quote and then we could go in to finalise cupboards etc. But I haven't heard anything back yet.
Sent them 2 messages that have been read but no reply.
Thinking might be better to start shopping around because this is just the first step and we are already seeing delays.
For our old house we got the quote on the same day. Fair enough these are different times, but I don't understand why that would delay our initial quote.

a week max else feel they're not very reliable - unless it's a very unusual request/design

Proudboomer · 17/02/2021 16:50

Er it’s wednesday so you haven’t even waited 2 days before messaging him twice.
I assume he has other work on so any quotes would be fitted around that. I am not sure if I would be happy with a quote coming back in a day. Shows he either has no other work and good trades people usually have a waiting list or they haven’t researched the quote properly and you will end up with loads of extras.

Getting a standard white kitchen and we have requested the ready to fit range, so it should be a question of adding up the price of the cupboards. I haven't selected handles or anything yet as he said we can do this after the initial quote. I've literally had no contact from them since they left which to me is not very good service. Its not a final quotation, its a starting point. At least an acknowledgement of my messages or time frame would be politeness.

This is also a company, not a sole trader.

I would give them a week but I know how frustrating it is when they take so long to get back to you.

The kitchen supplier we liked most when meeting always took ages to get back to us and by the time he did respond, half the discussion was forgotten and not reflected in modifications. We kept giving one more chance because we liked him as a person and his work but gave up in the end as others always had full update within 24 hours of appointment.

If its heading that way, don't bother wasting your time

Proudboomer · 17/02/2021 17:13

If it a company they will take longer as the fella who came around probably won’t be the one working out the quote. He probably passed the info on to someone in the office who does the quotes. They might or might not be working from home atm so could add additional delays.
I would give them a week before chasing.

I'd say approx. a week as a standard for a quote.

There are huge issues at the moment with supply of certain core timbers and carcassing across the industry - if the door/unit components are not manufactured in the UK it is a complete nightmare waiting for shipping dates from manufacturers. Unless it is something like a Howdens kitchen (which are manufactured in UK factories) the company you contacted may well be waiting for stock updates.

Comefromaway · 17/02/2021 17:29

Are they designing it or is it like for like just replacing what is there now?

For the former I’d expect 7-10 days for the latter about 5 days.

I think both my kitchen design quotes took about a week.

Andthenanothercupoftea · 18/02/2021 08:44

I'd say a week to 10 days. I assume your also getting other quotes in that time too?

SaltyTootsieToes · 18/02/2021 08:59

I had howdens out Monday (utility room but it’s the size of a kitchen). You can’t get more of standard than that. I know the guy was not going to leave me and immediately go to his desk and do my plans

I know I’m not his only customer

You should give a week

However, if I were him, if the company would also be fitting it, I don’t think I’d be engaging you as a customer now. Not sure anyone could meet your expectations. A chill pill is in order (or G&T) big time.

Honestly, why are half of you so rude? Thanks to those who have answered nicely.
As I have said, last time we got a kitchen in our old house we got the quote on the same day and it was a bigger job. The only thing we had to wait for was the installation quote because they wanted to check my measurements. It was not a dodgy company, just a very large chain.
Aibu in thinking ignoring messages is rude. And btw I didn't chase them in my messages, I just wanted to check I gave the right email address and the name of the flooring company they recommended that he was meant to message me with.

We are not getting a complete overhaul. We are getting kitchen cupboards, no floor, no wall tiles, we aren't changing the layout it's not a complicated request.

In terms of delays I mean the fact that we messaged them a while ago they said they would call. No call
Messaged them again 2 weeks later, they said sorry will call in 30 mins. No call.
Messaged them the next day asking if they were going to call, and they finally did, so this is not just they have been punctual up until now and then I can't wait. I've been trying to get things in progress for 3 weeks.

also thanks for showing off that you have a large utility room.....not really sure that was relevant.......

No-one has been rude Confused

longdressed · 18/02/2021 12:19

Where on earth is the rudeness?!

Depends on the job though. I would give 5 working days before prompting I think.

FrancesFlute · 18/02/2021 13:19

I would wait a week then move onto another company.

This is a good indication of their customer service should there be any issues with your kitchen.

I emailed a couple of businesses last week (roofer and landscaper) asking for them to come and quote. Didn't hear from roofer so contacted another company. I then phoned the landscaper to follow up email and he was apologetic about not getting back and helpful.

FrancesFlute · 18/02/2021 13:23

I think PP only mentioned size of utility as she was having a kitchen company out. It wasn't boasting Hmm

Sorry you are stressed about this. It is stressful having the chase things like this when you know businesses are busy. Would you feel comfortable phoning them say tomorrow 'hi I just wondered when to expect our quote as I'm getting a few?' then they've had 5 working days. If they fob you off I think best to move on.

fashu · 18/02/2021 15:57

I think it's rude to say the company shouldn't work with me anymore because I've sent them some messages.....sorry, but like i don't know why that is relevant.
I have the quote now, but it's not really detailed and it's quite a bit more expensive than I was expecting. Considering it's not including the flooring, walls and appliances etc its nearing 10k! They've asked if we want to book in, but I haven't even seen a plan yet. Literally a piece of paper with serial number of cupboards and colours. We still have a few appointments over the weekend and they have already booked in 'reveals' after 48 hours where they will show the plan and discuss pricing which I feel a lot more comfortable with.

Fingers crossed. This is the last thing to be done in our new house before baby arrives so want to make sure it's all ready!

OP posts:
FrancesFlute · 18/02/2021 16:38

Yeah, I wouldn't be saying yes with just some serial numbers either but is it a design you're having done i.e. new layout or is it just replacing cupboards all same size as current etc.?
