Small garden landscaping - cost?

We live in a pretty standard Victorian terrace with a small rear garden. It's got a patio, a lawn area and a shed at the back. I'd like to revamp it a bit e.g. get the lawn relaid, perhaps a bit of decking at the back with a small seating/bbq area with a path between the patio and deck.

I'm thinking of getting a landscaper in to do the lot but have absolutely no idea what kind of costs to expect. Has anyone done something similar?

I'm afraid I don't know OP, but I am also about to start looking into the same thing. Also a small terraced garden. So I'm bumping your thread in the hope we both get some idea of costs.

Thanks mango. I've researched a few local landscapers. Some well reviewed options but no costs are quoted. I'm hoping to get a few in to quote when we're allowed again but would like some kind of benchmark to measure them against.

I can tell you our costs for a fair bit more work. We had a wild area at the back of the garden on a slope.

The company created a 5x5m playarea with bark, a path running down the hill, three patio areas of around 2.5m Square and timber walls. It took them 3 weeks and cost £11,000 including VAT.

We've had a quote for the next bit which is a new patio area plus levelling etc which is around £5k.

It depends upon labour days but imagine around £700 for a two man team per day. They go very fast though so may get all you need done within two days. Hard landscaping can be heavy on materials too, it's worth going onto a trade website to check out rough material prices to compare.

Thanks moonlight. Sounds like a lot more work than I'd need but give some kind of idea of cost. I was guessing somewhere in the region of 3K, but hoping less! Depends on what we had done of course.

We live in a victorian maisonette with patio and rear garden and have decided to some of the landscaping work ourselves which have saved a small fortune in costs.
We do however employ a local gardener who charges £15 per hour (most around where we are in Bristol are £20/hour) and we assist him in the work. He leads but this helps
keeps the cost down and allows us to learn on the job and get involved same time. We use a local tool hire company to hire the garden tools ourselves and they deliver and collect so it's no problem with getting the equipment. Found prices to be very reasonable for popular items like turf cutters, brush cutters, tillers etc

If at all possible, it’s worth doing the design and build yourselves insofar as possible and maybe just getting someone in to do any specific bits you’re not comfortable with (maybe fencing/ patio relay etc). If it’s a flat garden and you don’t have to terrace it or move tons of earth/build retaining walls to deal with a slope it should be straightforward. YouTube is your friend. We were quoted an obscene anoint and halved the total by doing the clearance and raised bed sleepers and planting ourselves

I would highly recommend getting a number of quotes.
We had our small garden done last year, all dug up, artificial grass laid and a new fence on two sides.
I got three companies round to quote and they came in at £2.5k, £5k and £6k. Interestingly the one I liked best and thought seemed most knowledgable was the £2.5k one. They did a fabulous job and completed it in half the time the other companies said they would

I scoured Pinterest, found a design that suited our garden, copied it wholesale, ordered the materials myself and then asked a builder to create it. Much cheaper than using a gardening professional and am still thrilled with the result!

Thanks for the advise everyone. I appreciate it would be cheaper to do some of it ourselves but I'm quite keen on just paying someone else to get on with it TBH! It's a small garden so I'd imagine professionals could be done with it pretty quickly. If we take it on ourselves I can imagine it dragging on a bit. I guess I'll see how much the quotes come out and make a decision then.
