So we are in our new house, extension en route. Our new kitchen/family room will form part of a lovely 1930s property, with doors out to the garden. We do need to decide on our kitchen before submitting buildling regs.

We know these things:

  1. There will be an island, just a work surface
  2. Both of us are inclined to red and black as a colour scheme, no idea why

We do not know these things:

  1. Induction hob? If not, why not?
  2. Gas better than electric? (follows on from previous)
  3. Where do the bins go?
  4. Drawers for everything? Including massive ones for pots?

I'm sure I will think of more questions as I go on but probably enough for now... thanks people :)

Go on the DIY Kitchens online showroom. They are brilliant.

Induction hob...I moved from gas. Love it but they do scratch (mine is high end AEG). Also need a dedicated electrical feed so make sure the builder is aware.

Bins in one huge pull out cupboard divided between recyclable, normal plus two others smaller bins so caters for all different regimes
.

We have 4 huge pan draw s with equally huge narrow drawers about for cutlery and cooking implements. Have enough space to have a drawer for working cutlery and also another for special stuff.

Out island is just that...no sink or induction Hob on it. Really glad. Is a large social space we can all sit around with of course loads more storage under it. Ore Covid times friends loved visiting and all sitting around and eating there as well

Red and black..wouldn't be my choice but colours are very individual. We went for a grey and blue regime which I still love.

We have quartz..very hard wearing (and expensive) but not indestructible as I manage to scratch it dropping a plate.

Electric socket. I had one put in the under island cupboard and is great if someone wants to sit using a laptop there. I didn't like the ones that lift up out of the quartz and is just wired into the cupboard.

Cooker hood. Make sure it can be installed high enough if any of you are tall.

Placing lighting. Make sure the spots are directly over workspace but not blocked by cupboards or you get shadows and have led strip lights under all the wall cupboards. Make sure you have sewerage circuits so if a large kitchen divide up the lights into circuits thinking about if you were sat with friends socialising which ones you want in. I divided mine between
Led under cupboards
Around the edge of the kitchen area
Back and over island area
Other open plan areas.

Make sure you have dimmers in each circuit..invaluable.

Allow for an American fridge and a built in water feed for drinks....I just love it and food lasts twice as long as before as the temp is so well controlled.

That's it so far

How exciting. Good luck with it all.

Re position of the bin - I'm going for one below my prep area so I can just open the bin (pull out) and scrape the peelings etc straight into there. It will mean it is a bit far away from where we're making hot drinks, but I'd much rather walk a few metres occasionally with a pile of tea bags, than have to transport veg peelings across the room, dropping them as I go (which is what I do now! :D )

We're going for an induction hob. Do ensure you decide this in good time as you can't always have certain things e.g. upstands, behind gas hobs but you can behind electric/induction.

Def use DIY kitchens planner. Hours of fun!

What do you need to submit to building regs? Can you do it under a building notice?
