recommendations places to live midlandsish - £160,000

suddenly found myself soon-to-be single with 2 dcs and I'm still crying and shaking.
Am starting with a blank sheet and am looking for small town, large village, 3 beds, good primary and secondary schools for £150 to £170,000.
Any chance of nice areas to live that fit the bill?

Sorry, don't know your full story but do you have to move away from where you are now? Would think it be less unsettling for your dcs if they could stay put or at least stay in same area close to existing friends and at same school if they are school age?

Sorry you are having a bad time....

How Midlands? What woudl be your preferred towns to give us a clue? Is Matlock Midlands enough?

needahand · 02/11/2007 16:33

I have just moved to Milton Keynes and there are quite a lot of nice Villages around and it is really good for kids + you have the benefit of big town + country side so the best of both world. Housing prices are quite reasonable.

I really like it so far, would recommend.

Sorry to hear about your hearthacke though

i hope you find somewhere. we are further north in garstang, between lancaster and preston. lovely area fantastic schools, low crime, plenty of green space. you can get stuff in your price range around here. but might be too far north!

Thinking Leicester villages at the moment but other areas considered.

Rugby is OK. There are good schools around, and you can get decent houses for under £200,000. The town centre is a bit pikey sometimes, but you can get everything you need. Daventry also seems nice, and Leamington is lovely, but pricey.

Isn't Oadby meant to be quite nice??? Quick look on Rightmove shows loads in your price range

how about lincolnshire, very close to leicestershire. excellent schools and good value for money in house department.

mumof2teenboys · 03/11/2007 13:22

agree with moodlum, rugby is ok, there are some nice houses around, not the town centre though. there are lots of villages close by and some quite nice suburbs.

Please auntiebetty consider my property, we haven't put it on the market yet, found out yesterday DC no. 3 is on the way and our closet rellies are 30 miles away so have talked about moving and know this is now the time.
Our house is in Hall Green, South B'ham, easy access to M40, M42, M6, 30 mins to B'ham International but no air noise pollution what so ever, 30 mins to B'ham city centre, fab high street 10 mins away with big name stores.
Wonderful neighbours too.
3 bedroom terrace, upstairs bathroom (recent total rennovation), large lounge, kitchen overlooking garden, spacious under the cupboard stairs, 2 new radiators in every single room (excluding kitchen), new double glazing throughout, 92 ft (newly landscaped) garden with patio one end and deck at the other, lawn inbetween and an array of edge plants and trees.
We have lived here for 5 years and at the top of the road is one of the best primary's in UK, Chilcote School.
I love it here, I really do, but need of family help and support is our only reason for leaving.

Maybe consider renting first - if you want away from ex you don't want to be saddled with a property/area you don't like. Don't rush into buying somewhere, it is a buyers market and you can take your pick when the time is right. Good luck

grannyslippers · 20/01/2008 01:44

Can you manage Lutterworth - it seems a lovely small town and has schools too. I live in Leicestershire and like it a lot. Also Market Bosworth, Kirby Muxloe, Leics Forest East, Burbage...

alipiggie · 20/01/2008 04:12

I would recommend Leicestershire villages over Rugby - sorry. Lived there most of my life and wouldn't touch it. Crime is rising and house prices are crazy for what you get. As for the town centre it's undergoing huge construction at the moment with the old co-op being rebuilt, very little car parking now. The better schools are in the Bilton/Hillmorton Areas which are much more expensive.

I went back when I separated last year and was horrified that I couldn't find a decent house for under 180,000. You would probably be able to rent in a better area to be honest than to buy.

Sorry moodlumtheWOOOHOOHOOhoodlum if you live there, but it really is a very different town from the one I first lived in. My parents still live there and they certainly wouldn't recommend it.
