Consider scenes/moods and how you want the lighting to be at different times of the day and night.
Think about task lighting and accent lighting.
Think about where you want the lighting to be controllable from and whether you just want simple dimming or scene control.
Consider a round-pin table lamp circuit if this is a major rewire/refurb - gives flexible options for accent lighting in future.
Do you have art on your walls you want to light?
Are there any lights it would be better to have operate by motion sensor (inside cupboards, bathrooms, etc.)
Think about colour temperature as well - cool light is fine for workspaces, but in living areas you likely want warmer lighting.
e.g. in a kitchen / diner:
You want bright task lighting for when you are cooking - likely a combination of ceiling and under cupboard lighting.
When you sit down to dinner you want to eliminate or at least dim a lot of that bright light and have some warmer light above the table, maybe with kickboard lights and under cupboard lights still on in kitchen so it's not completely dark.
Then for clean-up you might want some brighter lights around the table area to make sure the table and floor are clean.
Not a lighting designer, but the voice of experience from living in a house that clearly was lighting designed to now living in one that wasn't (and could have done with being).
