Mirror walls round bath in bathroom? CHANGE MY MIND

Redoing our pokey 80s bathroom (falling to bits TBH) and cannot for the life of us find something we like for waterproof wall coverings.

I am so fed up with browsing tile and wetwall samples.

Um - is there any reason we couldn't just have mirrored glass on the three sides of the bath? I know glass shower panels and mirrored glass kitchen splashbacks exist so I suspect it's possible.

Would make bathroom look bigger and most importantly get us out of choosing a tile or wetwall (which we've been failing to do for over a year!).

Water marks will drive you mad, surely?

Plus, I can't think of much worse than trying to avoid looking at myself while relaxing in the bath or drying my backside.

applesandpears33 · 15/02/2021 13:18

I've seen mirrored glass on the wall along the long side of the bath before. It looked OK, but didn't age well. I suspect the water got into the back of the mirror.

Squiffany · 15/02/2021 13:21

So you’re going from an 80’s bathroom back to a 70’s one?

PeacefulInTheDeep · 15/02/2021 13:24

I wouldn't. The water marks would drive me potty. And if you don't want to be looking at water marks all the time, that's a large area to be cleaned after every bath/shower.

RaspberryCoulis · 15/02/2021 13:24

God no. Who wants to be in the bath staring at their own reflection? Or see themselves reflected from all angles in the shower?

Yes mirrors are good for making bathrooms look bigger, but a large mirror over the sink is plenty. And you can use other tricks to make the space look larger like choosing the right tiles and using the right lights.

Iggly · 15/02/2021 13:26

As a bathroom is functional, there’s no need to make it look bigger - it won’t make it bigger!

So I wouldn’t if I were you. It would look cringe when in the shower/bath. I’d spend my whole time looking at the ceiling 😂😬😂

But if you like it then who cares 🤷🏻‍♀️

We have these, they are very silver, almost mirror like, you can ge a free sample. They may work better.

We're both shortsighted old hippy types so not worried about seeing our flab & wrinkles (very blurred).

Re water marks, I will do some test runs with existing bathroom mirrors and shower spray and see how we feel.

Good point appleasandpears - I guess fitting is going to be important whatever we put up - water behind anything has got to be an absolute Nono.

I think that would look very odd personally. If you don’t like tiles why don’t you paint the wall a nice colour and use clear panels?

eurochick · 15/02/2021 13:44

I can't think of anything worse than having my wallowing carcass reflected back at me when I'm open the bath tbh.

Touloser · 15/02/2021 13:47

Makes me think of cheap hotels.

Another one here who doesn't want to see themselves anytime they enter the bathroom!

Serin · 15/02/2021 14:25

They will look awful in a couple of years when the silvering on the back of the mirrors gets affected by moisture and deteriorates.
We had a mirrored panel, Porcelanosa (not cheap), and it looked awful after about 5 years.

Thecazelets · 15/02/2021 14:35

Yes, will look awful. Our architect specified mirrored splashbacks for a house we did 10 years ago and I vetoed it on the basis of the constant cleaning and likelihood that it would fail quite quickly. We went for white opaque glass instead.

InteriorDesignHell · 15/02/2021 16:41

I hear what you say, and genuine question here,
a) what's the difference between the mirrored glass where the silvering fails after 5-10 years due to moisture and the bathroom and shower room mirrors which have been just screwed to the wall for 30-odd years (no sealant round the edge) and are still fine and
b) why is moisture getting behind them when kind of the point of wetwall/splashbacks is to keep moisture away from the wall (i.e. away from "behind the splashbacks").
Genuine queries both, talk me through it...

Hand on heart - it's a no from me (and back in the 80s, I had a peach bathroom suite with mirrored walls...............) Trust me, it really was a look back in the day....

All water drops show and are reflected and magnified so they look twice their original size. OH finally replaced everything with a neutral suite and no mirrors......

minipie · 15/02/2021 16:46

If it’s just a bath and no shower then you may be able to get away with just paint (eggshell rather than emulsion) and avoid the tile/ panel dilemma.

Personally I would not use mirror as any tiny splash will create a very annoying mark.

minipie · 15/02/2021 16:47

the bathroom and shower room mirrors which have been just screwed to the wall for 30-odd years (no sealant round the edge) and are still fine

We’ve got a bathroom mirror which was installed in about 2015, but the bathroom was hardly used till 2017, and the silvering is starting to go at the edges already.

RuthTopp · 15/02/2021 16:48

My mind thinks brothel bathroom !

InteriorDesignHell · 15/02/2021 18:42

Sigh I think my mind has been changed, simply because I know we're not really that different from most people and most people say JUST NO SORRY ... well the silvering going is not going to be good, there's that too...

(Weeps silently at the prospect of looking fruitlessly through more bleeping wetwall / tile catalogues... Sad)

Perhaps I'm unusual , but for all the angst choosing things that you are stuck with for awhile , as in your dilemma .
After a short time of having those things in the home , they kind of become invisible , so why not save yourself many more hours and just go for something that you quite like / could live with and just go for them . I firmly believe we have too much choice these days 😢 which doesn't really help.

It will look like a sex thing but it also could be fun
