Is this bath/shower combo as impractical as it looks?

Getting a new family bathroom done and I’d like a big walk in shower as well as a bath. The room is big, but has a bit of an odd alcove. This (see picture) would work really well, but I can just see mould developing around the base of the bath and water seeping into the floor. Does anyone have one of these that actually works?

Could you face the bath the other way on the left hand side with taps in the middle of it which would be the left hand wall, then have glass and have a shower on the right next to the window where you enter from the bottom?

Acovic · 14/02/2021 23:43

My only concern would be the stuff on the shelving getting wet.

Japanese bathrooms often have a shower near the bath.

I looked at a flat with a set up like that. It wasn't the bathroom that put me off. Personally I think it's quite practical. I like a wallow in the bath but then I like to shower all the grime off!

TryingNotToPanicOverCovid · 14/02/2021 23:48

Wont the water get all over the floor? Making it slippery near the bath?

Akire · 14/02/2021 23:51

I agree that around the bath is going to be come a moat. Even if the floor has a big gradient. The glass shower door will never look that good unless you are constantly polishing it.

It's essentially a wet room, and wet rooms are a pain in the arse anyway, but with a bath there to complicate matters and create extra nooks and crannies for water to hang around in. Looks somewhat pretty but I think it would drive you mad.

MaggieFS · 15/02/2021 07:56

The whole point of this is that the floor does get wet hence the two drain holes in the floor.

I'd have no issue in principle, but with that shape bath, I think it could get a bit grotty in the corner up behind the bath.

whenindoubtBake · 15/02/2021 08:00

I think you would get water everywhere, cleaning would be a nightmare, especially in that gap at the front.

LawnFever · 15/02/2021 08:04

If your room has an alcove is that big enough to make into the shower area? This looks like the shower has been made separate for no real gain to it being over the bath, I’m not keen on the layout

Ifailed · 15/02/2021 08:12

imagine following someone in there whose just had a shower, the floor will be soaking wet, nor just by the bath but wherever they've walked. Multiply that by however many people who will be using it in the morning, and imagine being the last one in?

Bobkitten · 15/02/2021 08:34

Don’t do it OP. We had a small wet room, containing the only toilet in the house (small terrace; shower room was at the end of the downstairs extension). There was no room for a bath.

When anyone used the shower, despite curtains to hold back the worst of the spray, the whole floor would be soaking wet (and cold in winter). It was like using a swimming pool changing room. There would be wet footprints leading from the room.

I’d rather have a big walk-in shower and no bath, or a bath with a shower over it.

FudgeSundae · 15/02/2021 08:43

Could you make the bath built in and then water can’t get behind it? You could even have a shower tray too but that might be weird as you’d need to step into the shower tray to get to the bath.

minipie · 15/02/2021 11:31

I can see this working with a built in bath (with wet room flooring like wediboard underneath for protection) but not a freestanding bath, as it would get damp and grubby behind the bath and be very hard to clean.

There will be water marks all over the bath/bath taps, would this bother you?

If you had a small fixed return on the glass screen this would help the bathroom floor flooding.

minipie · 15/02/2021 11:32

Help avoid the bathroom floor flooding

Sorry, link not working, will find another pic x

80sMum · 15/02/2021 11:43

That would be an absolute pita! You'd need to angle the floor under the shower into a drain in the centre, which would be difficult because the bath needs to be on a level surface.
You would have a constantly wet floor, unless you took the trouble to manually dry it after every use of the shower.

The flooring in a wet room should be non slip, like you would have in a hospital or care home. The floor in the photo looks like it would be dangerously slippery when wet. With that type of floor, you'd need to add non slip matting or duck boards.

I have a walk in shower (not with the bath though) and the screen is a pita. It does need wiping down with shower cleaner after every use otherwise its a complete eyesore in the bathroom with water marks on it.

I think its going to be a nightmare to get in to behind the bath OP. Even our shower, the water sits in the corner a bit so we dry it up. I would hate to be crawling behind a bath to do it.

It looks lovely, but I am not sure its very practical.

How deep is the alcove. Could you not put the bath length ways on that side and the shower where the bath is, but facing towards the door?

RoomAtTheEndOfTheWorld · 15/02/2021 11:56

I think it would be a massive pita although I appreciate it looks nice.
Would you have space to do any of the following layouts instead?

These are a good idea, but only if you have plenty of space to work with!
