Have you ever bought a house with absolutely no parking?

It's a parking one! Kinda Grin

We've seen a house, which is perfect in every way except that it has absolutely no parking at all. It's a period property which opens straight onto the road so no driveway. That's not a problem in itself...but the road is a narrow dead-end and has double yellows on both sides. There are no roads leading off it that could be used for residential parking either.

We've emailed the agent about it but had no response. Whilst I love the idea of living on a street with basically no cars (we currently live on a main road!) it seems wildly impractical in reality.

Would you / have you bought a house on a road you couldn't park on?

If I loved the house then yes I would.

Pippa234 · 14/02/2021 20:40

No I wouldn't parking is always on my list.

Oly4 · 14/02/2021 20:40

No, I’ve bought a few with no driveways and only on road parking (period properties, loved them all) but now we have children I need to park near or at my property. If I didn’t have kids it wouldn’t bother me.
Where is the nearest parking?

Tambourina · 14/02/2021 20:40

Buy or rent a nearby garage. Problem solved.

Stopsnowing · 14/02/2021 20:42

No.

SylviaPlath1984 · 14/02/2021 20:44

If it was perfect and I truly loved it, I'd find a way around it! Might it be worth asking the agents again to ask the vendors how they and others on the street navigate the issue? There may be rentable parking close by! Best of luck x

2tired2bewitty · 14/02/2021 20:44

How far away would you have to park? Will you be able to easily carry shopping/children/pets/elderly relatives/etc that far, in the rain/snow/etc. Might the answer to these questions change in the time you plan to own the house?

Pre children we bought a house with on street parking but in a very overcrowded road. Ok at first when it was just us (though annoying when you had to park round the corner) hard work when you were juggling baby and shopping. We vowed never to buy another house without off street parking.

Do you have or want kids? If either it’s a no from me

CarlottaValdez · 14/02/2021 20:46

Yeah my last house was no driveway and double yellows on the road. We had to park about 2 minute walk away on another street. It wasn’t a huge deal really.

Ginfordinner · 14/02/2021 20:46

No way. It would be a deal breaker for me. It would be very difficult to sell.

ParkingProblemo · 14/02/2021 20:47

Yeah we have talked about that but I don't think there is anything nearby. I don't really fancy paying extra to have to walk 10 mins to get my car every time I want to use it.

Just wondering how other people have managed really.

I have not bought a house because of the parking issues. Parking on a driveway Or right outside the house is a priority for me. Having lived in a flat where the parking was round the corner I realised that this is far from ideal So wouldn’t buy a house, however good it was if it didn’t tick the parking box.

Thislittlefinger123 · 14/02/2021 20:47

I wouldn't even view a house with no parking. Bonkers. Do you have a car? Where would you park? What about visitors? Unloading food shopping? Crazy. Must affect the price too surely (good for you now but not if you ever sell).

joystir59 · 14/02/2021 20:48

I love in an area of narrow streets and period houses. Parking is a huge issue. Some people do not have cars here just because parking them is such an issue. Moving in/out and ordering large items that get get delivered in lorries is a huge issue.

Bluntness100 · 14/02/2021 20:48

Yes, and if I could avoid doing it ever again I would. It’s a ball ache. Guests, shopping, security, it’s not good.

CuteOrangeElephant · 14/02/2021 20:48

Yeah we had that.
It was fine, even with a newborn.

Hmm, I say no. We have a driveway but no on street parking on our road or neighbouring streets. We had a skip in our drive for about 6 months when we were having building work and it was a nightmare - we often had to drive around for ages to find a parking space anywhere up to half a mile away. It was a trial trying to remember where it was parked, sharing info with DH if he was the next one to use it etc. And we don’t even rely on our car for much (only really used at weekends).

SendMeHome · 14/02/2021 20:50

We almost did... although we could have parked on the street for the house we loved, and they said that they always got two spots outside. We didn’t go ahead in the end... our town is a bit notorious for parking fees and there’s no guarantee the street wouldn’t get one, and generally, it just seemed a lot more inconvenient.

But we’re spoiled right now; we live five minutes walk from the town centre and have off street parking, free on street parking and a garage.

Yes, it's a doer-upper too so the thought of trying to get skips / trades vans / John Lewis delivering a sofa etc outside is already bringing me out in a cold sweat!

Such a shame, it's such a great house in every other way.

Wouldn’t bother me. We don’t have a car now at all, but when we did, we used to have to park in a nearby street. We are now in a car club and use a car parked a few minutes away. It’s fine.

Moving in isn’t an issue - you can pay to have the restriction suspended. Also you can unload ok.

I mean it’s up to you but I didn’t find it a massive issue at all.

RealisticSketch · 14/02/2021 20:54

I have friends who care not a jot whether they have parking but they bike/public transport everywhere and are resourceful characters who somehow get round tricky deliveries etc
Personally, I am too tied to my car to consider it. So I think people are firmly one or they other on this, which would make me worry if I could sell if I need to.... But then if you intend to live there for years that might not matter as much as it being gorgeous. 🤷

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 14/02/2021 20:54

It depends where it is in terms of how easily you could do without a car. In London ditching the car might be a sensible option if you love the house but rural Shropshire might pose more of a problem.
