Buying a plot for a caravan.

Is it possible to just buy a plot of land and put a mobile home on it or would that require planning permission?
We have also seen plots with planning permission already granted for houses, would that permission also extend you mobile home or would we have to reapply. We are very unsure of the rules.

Lots or rules around this are a ' grey area'...apparently you can occupy some of the time, have tools so you can claim to be a forest guardian...doing pruning etc..??...I think a lot depends on if the structure is considered permanent or not....lots of websites covering your questions and FB groups....probably better info than on here.

Thank you, not permanent, just for holidays.

Yes you’d need planning permission. And water/drains etc.

Honeyroar · 14/02/2021 23:08

You could buy a large touring caravan and park that permanently though..

We have a static on a private plot. Planning permission has never been applied for, although it is shown on the council planning maps.

I would have thought that it would be easier to get permission for a static on a plot with existing planning permission for a house, but it couldn't be guaranteed. They aren't usually the most attractive of structures and it could be against some local planning policy.

No you can't. You need planning permission to site anything for more than 28 days in which a person could live, moveable or not.

There is a grey area surrounding field shelters. Providing they are open at least one side, and are moveable, and not used for stabling, they may not need planning permission.

We park our caravan on our land perfectly legally. It hasn’t been moved for four years. And you can always move it regularly if need be. The OP is not planning to live there.

We also have a couple of field shelters. No planning. They are movable (have skids) but we haven’t moved them in 15 years. Some councils can make you move them every so often.

Thanks Honeyroar, what we have seen is lovely rural plot, not far from our sons home, with planning for a 4 bedroomed house. Our budget just wouldn't stretch to building a 4 bed house. We thought a static or touring caravan would be ideal for holidays and to see our son. There are no neighbours adjacent to the plot and the van would be well screened.

In that case I’d look at a log cabin. Speak to the planning dept. Some wouldn’t cost much more than a static and the planning might be happier about a cabin that looks nicer than a caravan..

We will be replacing our static with a something more akin to a timber bungalow. From memory, you can go up to 66 feet long and 22 feet wide and still have it qualify as a caravan.
