Move from York to Malton?

Raphym · 14/02/2021 08:40

I currently live in York with DH and two young children. We love that there is lots to do in the centre, but having grown up in the countryside I wonder about living Malton which seems to have a things going on but also gorgeous countryside around. Does anybody know if it would be a good place to raise a family? My husband is keen to remain in York, but is up for the move if it will suit family life. He also works in the north side of York so I wonder if the commute really would be half an hour or much longer at rush hour times? Any local knowledge much appreciated!

Just bumping for you OP.
I also live in York, and my family are out Malton/ Pickering way, but I can't add much I'm afraid! I'm not sure what the schools are like, I'd imagine pretty good?

Hopefully someone will be along soon with more info!

Not got young DC but believe schools are fine, and if you’re looking slightly out of Malton then Ryedale school is also an option. I do wonder with the rate of development going on at the moment what the effect will be on school places - huge swathes of family houses are being built which could put pressure on places so worth looking into.

The town has certainly been rejuvenated in the last 10 years with lots of new small businesses (mostly foodie), the food markets and just a more proactive approach from the estate in general towards the town centre. The new builds going up are also attracting lots of young families, I think in part because of how expensive York is getting. I think this has also had the benefit of reducing the ‘everyone knows everyone’ small town mentality that does exist (as in all market towns).

In terms of commuting, the advantage malton has over other comparable towns is the train station, however pre-lockdown this was notoriously unreliable and often crowded. There is also a bus that runs to York (Coastliner), and the park and ride from monks cross which could be quicker depending on where specifically in York you need to get to.

Easingwold and Thirsk are also options with easy access to north York, but IMO malton is far nicer than both!

Thanks for the info @FatRascalsAndJam. Do you know whether the drive into York is busy? My husband works on the northern outskirts of York so it says 30mins, but I don’t if it would be super busy in the mornings!

@FatRascalsAndJam Do you think there’s enough going on for older children? I’ve got 2 boys and can see there’s sports clubs so hopefully that would keep them busy!

I think you need to be very careful re the drive into work if needing to use the A64 (particularly in summer) or the A1237.

I don’t live in Malton but regularly used to commute from that direction into Clifton. My 30 minute ‘Google’ drive usually took an hour and that is despite knowing all the rat runs and trying to travel outside peak hours.

The A64 will be very busy with Scarborough traffic on a Monday morning, Friday night and throughout the Summer School holidays. The A1237 gets very slow in commuting periods at the Monks Cross, New Earswick and the Clifton Moor roundabouts. Once off that it also tends to be a crawl into the town centre areas.

Not knowing exactly where you are going I would suggest a few rush hour dummy runs to see how easy / difficult it would be.

That’s really interesting about the a64 @inmylifeIlovedthemall My husband teaches in Radcliffe so wouldn’t need to travel in summer holidays but will definitely do some test runs if it might be a problem at other times as well.

Just come across this thread. I'm from malton and I love it, its a great place to bring up kids.
Malton has the better secondary school, id personally say aim to be that side of the river to be in malton catchment.
Primary wise you want any except malton! Norton is great, st Mary's is also brilliant. There are lots of fab village schools too.
There isn't as much to do in town as there is in York, but we do have a cinema and a swimming pool, and there's so much in the surrounding area. We have passes for flamingo land and dalby forest as both are on the doorstep, and its just half an hour to the coast.
A64 is a nightmare traffic wise. Coastal traffic won't affect you much apart from Friday home time, however at rush hour there is always slow traffic in certain spots. But if he starts early enough it may not be an issue. Google maps is a pretty good indicator of traffic levels so worth looking at the route he would be using at the time he would be travelling for a couple of weeks once the schools have gone back x

Sorry to dig out an old thread, but we're in a really similar position to your original post! Did you make the move to Malton? How did it all go? 😊
