Please talk to me about showers

We have 2 showers, one in the main bathroom that is plumbed in and powerful (good water pressure here). The other is in our en-suite and it’s electric. This makes sense as with 3 pre teens dh and I we can all have a bath or shower in the same evening without running out of hot water. However, are there other options or really good electric ones? Here is my wish list:

Needs to be powerful
Needs to have rainfall head plus a hand held
Ideally temp controlled and turned on from outside cubicle (seems to be a feature of digital showers - what is a digital shower compared to electric?)
Wattage of shower - how do I find out current wattage?

I’m so confused and plan to gut and re do en-suite so want full luxury shower to enjoy. Please help Smile

Not an electric one, then.

Have you got a hot-water cylinder? What colour?

You can now get double headed rain fall electric showers (just released), I’ve one of these and it’s absolutely fab -

www.mirashowers.co.uk/showers/electric-showers/mira-decor-dual-108kw/

I don’t work for Mira btw! Just make sure your electrics can handle the wattage (it’s very powerful). It’s not remote but you can select which head or have both on simultaneously.

Surely size of water tank and whether it’s pumped to the shower will make a difference? If the best combination of water supply is made available in the bathroom you will get what you want. Low water pressure doesn’t support rain heads.

Double dessert

Your electric shower has about one third the power of a typical modern combi, so can deliver one third the flow of hot-water.

I don't consider that powerful.

Water pressure isn’t an issue in this house and the tank is big but not 3pre teen girls plus me and dh big. If we get back from a muddy dog walk I want us all to get showered.

@PigletJohn there’s a couple I’ve seen by Mira and aqua somebody (can’t remember) that are electric and reviews are very good but the wattage thing confused me as some reviews said they had to get something added to their boiler to adapt the wattage. I’m not sure how I find out as nothing obvious written anywhere.

Unvented hot water cylinders deliver hot water at mains pressure. You need a big one, or two can be fitted side by side, to supply hot water for more than one bathroom. We're getting our vented cylinder changed because it's ancient and the set up in our house is stupid with one bathroom relying on an immersion heater for hot water. Needless the say, that bathroom does not get much use.

What colour is it?

(This is not a joke)

m0therofdragons · 13/02/2021 16:09

Mine is Aqualisa and I love it!

CaurnieBred · 13/02/2021 16:44

An electric shower is a godsend if your boiler ever breaks down. I would always have one electric for that reason alone.

PigletJohn · 13/02/2021 17:17

So you have an unvented system, presumably heated by a gas boiler.

Provided that it is of adequate size, and has one or two electric immersion heaters fitted, it can give unsurpassed hot water, better than any electric shower or combi boiler. You do not need an electric shower because even if your boiler breaks down, you can heat the cylinder with the immersion heater until the boiler is mended.

BTW, the round-knob Aqualisa shower mixers are I think the best you can get.

Hi @PigletJohn by powerful I was just meaning the kw rating for an electric shower if the op wanted to go this route (mine required the cabling to be upgraded), can’t compare with modern combi showers for sure.
