Just trying to resolvea design query. We are building single storey extension on the back of a 1930s semi. Currently half the back wall is already opened up. We are not moving out kitchen, just planning to turn the existing units into a peninsular.

Is it worth opening up the remaining back wall (will cost almost 6k extra) or keep a pillar as part of the peninsular and just enlarge the existing window space?

If you’ve done it ether way are you happy or would you have done it differently?

The top of the picture is the existing kitchen in the house - already open plan from the original dining room and kitchen.

We are essentially putting a box on the back - to be used primarily as a family room - with a full length utility cupboard along the left hand side.

The pillar would be incorporated into the peninsular kitchen So wouldnt eat into the floor area or anything.

Open it up. Left over bits of the original building look out of place. Like you couldn’t afford to finish the job properly and put up with second best.

If the £6k doesn’t destroy you then do it, will look so much better and you’d never come back and redo it later. We avoided a house like that when we were purchasing.

Open it up definitely
