Norfolk

Looking for advice moving to Norfolk as struggling to visit due to lockdown.
Don't drive so need to live in the vicinity of a large place for work - but not inside it, so good public transport is essential.
Would like a reasonably upmarket area, but limited to a 375,000 budget.
Thanks!

What do you work as? Unless the sort of thing you can do more or less anywhere like retail or hospitality, you’re really going to be limited to in or around Norwich or Kings Lynn, particularly if you don’t drive. Public transport outside major towns isn’t great and I don’t think I’d want to rely on it for work.

“Norfolk” is a really broad area and £375k won’t go far in the “upmarket” parts of it, which can be almost on par with London prices.

Fair enough. Where might you recommend? I'll be a stay at home mum. Husband works in facilities so can work in lots of different type places. I'm happy to get a little part time job in Norwich once baby is older, just need to be sure I can easily get there.

If you want to work in Norwich ideally you need to live in about a 5 - 10 mile distance of the centre if you’re relying on buses / trains as any further than that and they’re bloody awful being honest. We moved from London to South Norfolk thinking there was a train station in the town that takes 20 mins to Norwich and 1.5 hours to London- well, it does, when it works. Hmm. And it’s hardly ever on time. Not great at all!

So if you can’t drive you won’t want to live anywhere further than Norwich itself if you want to work there. Or a look at large towns around Norfolk instead - Wymondham, Beccles, Stowmarket (not as nice as some other areas but lots of larger shops), etc.

In a dream world if I worked in facilities I’d try to get a job at Holkham Hall and then live in one of the North coast villages - though that’s where you start looking at almost London-esque prices.

Agree with Bagels on towns surrounding Norwich. If you can get work in Dereham then I think that’s quite charming, and not too far from Norwich for shopping and entertainment.
